Please NO! The military doesn't want people serving against their will. We don't want a draftee army. We have the best military on earth because we are all volunteers, highly motivated, etc. And we're still far from perfect. We'd have a million more problems with a draftee army....

Mandatory? Please NO! Most of todays youth between the ages of 18 and 25 couldn't handle the military. I've been in for a while and watch a lot of people wash out and they are the ones who volunteer. Now if you had ask would it do most of the males and females good I would have to agree. With the obesity rates in the US being about the highest in the world, basic training would do them all good. Plus you can learn a lot of skills that are useful in civilian life. We do more than just run around and kill people. As to the second part of your question "how would this effect the US?" I would have to say it would make it much better. The people I serve with have fantastic work ethics. Don't mind getting dirty if that is what it takes to get a job done. Are a lot more self confident than the civilian I know. Better self esteem. I can't think of a single thing that military service couldn't improve in most young people.

2 years of mandatory service, not just in the military but in the local communities would be a great idea. Instill a little pride and discipline in folks. Teach them a skill, a way for the poor to get a step up and move in the direction of self reliance. Think of all of the good that could come from this. Clean up for Katrina would be done by now and building would have begun..........

Libertarian tho' I am, I believe all young people should be required to serve a period of national service (military or smiliar public service) as a condition of citizenship & the right to vote & hold office.

It would help unify the country and make it clear that all the benefits the country provide must be paid for and worked for.

I think it would be a GREAT idea.

1) Everyone would get some sort of training that might be of some use to society outside of the military. Possibly reducing unemployment and crime rates.

2) People would get a chance to interact with others from diverse and different socio economic backgrounds as well as others from different ethnic and religious groups. Might help people to think a little differently about their country and about each other.

3) It would help "disadvantaged" people get a foot up and out of their respective slums, barrios or hood. It could help save some people from a life of crime or a life in prison.

I do not agree with mandatory military service, but I would like some kind of mandatory civil service. Get young people involved in their communities and allow them to appreciate what they have. Our all volunteer armed services are just fine without a mandatory service.

I think when a person graduates or turns 18, they should be made to serve a 3 - 4 year term in the military, branch of their preference. It would instill a little respect for the military and would instill a feeling of belonging in our younger generation. We would have enough military then to guard our borders and still have enough to help in case of disasters within the U.S.

No, not military. Everyone should have to work, though. Transfer payments in America cost more than the entire military. Don't know what transfer payments are? Look it up. You need to know this.

They SHOULD start pensions after the first few years of service, though.

Not military but some sort of civil service should be required, at a pay that exceeds McDonalds or Berger King
