I chat with a friend in India who does not understand why people in US say it. Help me explain

It's a greeting, a friendly wish that you will have a good morning, or good afternoon, or good evening.

People say good morning all over the world but in different languages. Americans are sometimes different that other cultures, but most are right along with us on a nice greeting.

Also, good afternoon or evening or morning. Formal ways of saying "Hello" or "Goodbye." For example, He began rather oddly by addressing the audience with "Good day," or "Good afternoon, ladies," said the sales clerk as we walked out. All these greetings represent an abbreviation of the now obsolete God give you a good day (afternoon, etc.), which dates from about 1200.

you *don't* say good mourning. you say good morning, in order to wish someone a pleasant morning.
