The most authoritative site on the net to answer your question is www.dpreview.com. They have superb impartial reviews and a very active forum.

Most popular cheap SLRs have already been mentioned above. Whatever you buy, wait till October. The photography marketing world revolves around several major trade shows where new cameras get introduced. The next such show is Photokina in Germany, which starts on Sept 26. I would never buy a camera just weeks before the show....wait a bit and see what new cameras get announced. For example someone mentioned Canon 350D...Canon 400D has already been announced. This is an exciting time in digital photography where the advancement curve is really steep, so you do wanna get the latest (unlike in the more mature PC market, for example, where the new machines do not offer that much more than the older models). And if you don't want the latest, remember that the introduction of new models immediately knocks the price of the older ones, so you can get the same Canon 350 for much cheaper. Good luck!

I agree with the above answers that the cheapest digital SLR worth investing in is the Nikon D50 (around $550 for the body or $800 with a starter lens and a memory card), followed by the Canon Rebel XT (around $630 for the body and $900 with a starter lens and memory card).
Pentax has a few models that are cheaper, but I wouldn't bother with those.
Someone mentioned to wait for Photokina but there's really no need to. Nikon will not replace the D50 this year, so the price on that model won't drop much, and the price of the Canon Rebel XT has already come down substantially since the announcement of the XTi - I don't expect it to drop much more, and since the XTi will cost $800, I'd jump on the old model while the remaining stock lasts. In my opinion the extra features of the XTi don't justify the price jump.
As mentioned, www.dpreview.com is a great site for reviews. So is http://www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_reviews.html
And as mentioned, http://www.bhphotovideo.com is a great place to shop. Other good stores are http://www.beachcamera.com and http://www.ritzcamera.com

Well, you can 1 of 2 roads (well, you can do both, but its a waste of cash) Either the Nikon D50 or the Canon Digital Rebel XT

The D50 is a 6.2 MP does decent pics and retail for about $600 to $700, it works w/ all Nikon lenses and is considered a good camera

The Rebel XT is a 8 MP camera and is about to go down (if not already) on price because its replacememnt is due out later this month (DReb XTi) I use this camera my self and it works great, great pics, can use all the Canon lenses and a good software package. I cant tell you the price because sale price will vary, go to http://www.bhphotovideo.com . They are one of the best camera store in the USA and should have a real good price for it and the D50

Good Luck
