The reason I ask this is because when we went out to dinner last night a woman sat there at her table next to us, and talked loud throughout the entire meal. My boyfriend and I couldn't hear ourselves and the place was packed so it wasn't an option to get another table. We have also seen and heard people using their cellphones while watching a movie. What do you think is proper cellphone etticate?

I think it's rude to talk on the cellphone in restaurants, movie theaters, and church. I think it's suicidal to talk on the cellphone while driving a car or operating heavy machinery.

What really gets me is when the person is discussing things in public that I'd be embarassed to tell a priest! I don't want to know what use you and your boyfriend found for that half-eaten jar of peanut butter, last week's National Enquirer, and an electric toothbrush!

I think the right thing to do is to excuse yourself and say that you'll call the person back later. Better still, put your phone on Vibrate: that way, you'll know you've got a call, but you're not disturbing other people.

And if you really MUST take a call, go outside or to the bathroom, where you won't be disturbing others.

proper cell phone etiquette is just as anything else respect the people around you and the people you are with. If you need to use your phone in the middle of dinner or a movie you should get up and go somewhere more private. I f the phone is that important you should eat dinner or catch a movie at home. no one else really wants to hear your conversation!!!!! I think the whole cell phone thing should be reexamined it causes a lot of problems with other things as well.

I work in fast food and so I see and even do talk on the phone a lot in a restraunt or a restraunt situation...and honestly as long as you keep your voice low enough and do not hinder others including the person trying to take your oder correctly I feel your fine. I often work the order taker spot in drive thru and it is so annoying when you can't even get the answers for questions like crispy or grilled chicken or what size or whatever answered because they are to busy talking on the phone to notice that you have asked a clarifing question.

At the movies your phone should be off or on vibrate....and if you need to answer it you should do so as your exiting the theater.

Absolutely not in a movie. At dinner, the proper thing to do is to answer the call and then excuse yourself from the table and finish the call away from other diners.

It definitely is rude to speak on a cell phone in a public place at a loud volume. A quiet conversation away from others is OK.

Definitely, without question, rude. I would have asked her to take it outside. If the call is that important, go into the lobby, that is the right thing to do.
This situation is becoming way too commonplace. I see it all the time and it drives me crazy. I paid good money for the meal/movie, not to hear their conversation!
What really gets me is that I don't even own a cell-phone because I hate them so much due to people like that.

In the theatre -- It is always improper to even let one's phone or pager ring or beep in the theatre, much less hold a conversation.

In a restaurant -- If one does not have a loud voice (unfortunately people with loud voice's usually don't know it) and one is either dining alone, or one's table mates don't mind, (if you need to answer, the answer is yes, they mind, even if they would not say so) a BRIEF conversation is acceptable. If the conversation is more than brief, excuse yourself and leave the table. -- and then only if urgent. You have a social obligation to the people you are with. You and the caller can talk later. You should understand this, even if your caller is clueless.

I personally think its rude to do it at a restaurant. If you must answer your phone, simply state you will call back at a more appropriate time. At a movie theater, it's even worse! They ask you to refrain from cell phone usage so that everyone can enjoy the movie. If people violate this, you have every right to get a manager.

It is not proper to use the cell phone in restaurants, at the movies or what I hate the most driving a car.

Do you even have to ask? Of course it's bad etiquette. It's downright RUDE, RUDE, RUDE. Why didn't you notify the management? I would have and insisted that they have the patrons turn off the phone or I would never return to their restaurant again, AND tell all my friends not to, PLUS write a letter to the local newspaper. Do not take this bad behavior. We have to protest!

I agree. It is rude. I was at the end of a yoga class when the teacher brought us to a state of full - well deserved relaxation. It was my treat to myself for having a stressful week and right at that moment, a cell phone rang and the woman at the mat in front of me answered it and started talking!
Cell phones are great, but we survived before them.
