Usually, anything with "Caine" in the name is a type of anesthetic. I work at a dental office, and we use Lidocaine, Carbocaine, Polocaine, etc. as a local anesthetic. I believe Benzocaine is a topical anesthetic. It would be used to superficially numb the gum area before an injection. It can also be found in throat sprays (for sore throats). Also, it can be used for babies who are teething.
