I think your problem is the actuator.

My dad has a 2002 Toyota Tacoma Limited Double Cab V6 4WD... To change from rear wheel drive to 4WD, I press a button. Its been working fine, but I have read in the manual that it is a good idea to press the 4WD button every month and drive for ten miles in 4WD mode to ensure those parts stay lubricated and working. If you haven't used the 4WD mode in a while, that might have caused the problem. I'm not an expert, but you should bring it to the dealer and have them check it out. It is true some Toyota models are being manufactured in the US and that they aren't as reliable as the ones made in Japan. (Their work ethic is just better). (I'm not Japanese, I'm an American). But still, some models in the US are made in Japan, like the new RAV4. The RAV4 is 100% Japanese made. Some are 90% Japanese and others are made elsewhere.

I am not that familiar with your car however having taken auto shop from my dad my diagnostic skills say that you likely have faulty or damaged programming, faulty or damaged wiring or a flat out part failure.
side note the flat out part failure will be the worst to have and the easiest to fix if the programming is bad replace the vehicle asap as that will make it undriveable in as little as 3 years if not sooner.

IT is most likely that the problem is electrical( switch, wiring, or actuator). Take it to the dealer or a good auto electrician to test it for you

It is probably an electronic problem. Take it to the dealer.

because it's electronic, not mechanical, and anything electronic is more likely to break than something mechanical in a vehicle.
