The lock or the actual movement of the door?

If it's the lock, you could put some powdered graphite in and work the lock back and forth a few times with the key. If it's the movement, try some silicone spray on the slider and the hinges.

You may also want to check that the hinges are not bent. If someone had a larger tire on the carrier at one time, it could have been too heavy for the door and caused some damage.

I have a 1995 Jeep Wrangler with 175,597 miles on it (something like that). It just started to rust this past year. I love it because it's so reliable, so I am going to keep it. The hinges on the back gate of mine were rusted and causing problems. I sanded them down and that didn't seem to help, so I replaced the hinges. It works well now. That may be the problem with yours.

That's called the "tailgate" ---- just spray some WD-40 on the hinge pins occasionally.
