I am in the business, and you are getting some interesting advice. Interesting, but mostly inaccurate.
If you are looking for a machine that offers a regular "good" payout, there really is no such thing. What you may be looking for is a machine that offers a decent "hit frequency". "Hit frequency" is simply the number of times a machine will offer some form of payback, whether it be a jackpot, a great payoff, a return on your original bet, or just a partial return on your original bet.
The lower the denomination, the "tighter" the machine is. Period. Pure and simple.
So, if you want to have a good time, and stretch your gambling dollar for a period of time, choose machines such as Double Diamond, Double Double Diamond, Red White and Blue, and Triple Diamond. These games offer a relatively high hit frequency.
The trend these days is for more "volatile" games. Which means you experience dry spells, and then oil wells. It seems the hard core gamblers have a higher tolerance for risk, and this is what they are playing.
More volatile games are games such as the Aristocrat video reels, or any spinning reels with 5X Pay, 10X Pay etc.

First off look at the pay table. All machines are going to keep about 90-98% of your money (in the long term, in the short term they may keep 100%!). The machines that offer low jackpots of say 2000 credits are clearly going to pay out more often than those that pay out a progressive jackpot of several million dollars. The bigger the jackpot the more money the machines are going to have to collect before they can afford to pay it out. Now this is not to say that the machines know how much they have collected, you could theoretically win the jackpot on the first spin, but the odds are clearly set up to make this very unlikely.
Quite honestly if I am going to play a slot I like to play progressives. Sure it is almost impossible to win, but it is always exciting to know that there is a very slim chance of winning a life altering amount of money. While winning $1,000 would be nice, it's hardly going to change my life.
So at the end of the day just remember that the smaller the jackpot the more likely you are to win it, but in either case the odds are still very much against you. Seek out machines where the payout is advertised (like 97% or better), always play 25c (or higher) machines and bet max coins. Don't waste your money on penny slots or nickle slots. Good luck.

The average slot machine pays back 90-97% of what it takes in. Even the best paying (loosest) machines still keep more money than they pay out, and if you play the slots, you will eventually lose your money. That's what keeps Nevada green!
If you want the best odds on winning in Las Vegas, play live black jack or poker. The odds are still in favor of the house, but at least you can use your own skill to improve your odds instead of depending on a random spin of the wheel.
The best way to gamble in any casino is to decide what you can afford to lose (your bankroll) before you walk through the door, and stick with it. If you're winning, put your original bankroll back in your pocket and play on the house's money. If you lose your bankroll... go home!

I guarantee you these are the facts on slots, The are controlled by a random number generator which has no memory of if the last pull was a win or a loss, NO cold or hot machines !!
Simple answer-- higher denominations hit less but pay more, Lesser denominations hit more but pay less.
Best answer is to join the slot club FIRST thing and take advantage of their offerings, Off strip sites have a little higher hit rate to bring in more customers.

The best advice I have is if you are going to play progressive slots, stay away from MegaBucks machines. Yes, they have the biggest jackpots but they are well known for being among the lowest payback % machines of all slots in the state.

your best bet when playing slot machines is to play deuces wild video poker. It generally offers better odds than most other video poker machines and regular old slot machines are a waste of money.

Play machines close to the front door and public areas. They are set to pay off more often so that they can be seen by the public.

ok this is 2nd hand advice.....
my sister and bro-in-law went to vegas for their honeymoon...
they say:
if you do your gambling in the main strip of vegas, you won't win as much as if you go the off sites.... in the strip they are "rigged" to go off numerous times in a short period, therefore not letting you win as much as those that are not "rigged" and collect more money between the winners...
i use the word "rigged" not to imply thay are such....
it's just for lack of a better "term"
