Take it from this pro musician. If all you're looking to do is keep your throat clear, take water with lemon. I once played in a band whose lead singer did that and it worked wonders for him.

However, if you're doing a gig after a long day, you'll definitely need a can or two of Red Bull or some other similar energy drink so that you don't appear too tired on stage. Last year I did a nightclub gig just a handful of hours after returning from a week-long vacation in Toronto and I found the Red Bull did wonders for me.

However, do not under any circumstances consume any dairy products before a gig. In your system, dairy products are very thick and will not flow easily. I avoid dairy products because they create a mucus that builds in my throat, and I end up having to cough like crazy until my throat is clear--and you don't want to do that on stage, especially in front of a live mike.

Someone also suggested alcohol. I don't recommend that, although I have seen some musicians drink alcohol during breaks. If you're going to drink alcohol, the key is moderation, because one thing you do not want to do is appear intoxicated on stage. When you're performing in front of an audience, you have to give your best. Otherwise, people are going to remember the "drunken" aspects of your performance, and that will affect your future marketability.

A good friend of mine is a great singer, and when she was sick, her vocal coach wouldn't let her have milk or anything sweet. I act so I have to preserve my voice so I stick with water when I feel a sore throat coming on, plus a lot of citrus.

Water. Tea with lemon is good, too. Stay away from milk and dairy right before a performance.

Water.....with lemon and NO ice. Hot tea with honey. Those are your two best bets!

I see a lot of actors drinking hot (or warm) tea while warming up for a show.
