Can Concerta (ADHD meds) be broken up and administered several times during the day?

Our daughter takes Concerta for help with ADHD once in the AM. Her attention span wains in the afternoon and I would like to know if the medication can be split into two doses. I would like input from people actually practicing this, we are talking to our doctor as well.

No, because Concerta is an extended release medication. This means the medicine is slowly distributed over a period of about 8-10 hours. If your daughter is not taking the maximum dosage the doctor could increase the dose or possibly decrease the milligrams in the pills and give it to her twice a day. For example, 10 milligrams two times a day instead of 20 milligrams once a day(you didn't specify the current dosage). The maximum dosage for adults (don't know about children) is 72 milligrams once a day. This would be given in two pills of 36 milligrams once a day. I started with 54 milligrams which is the highest dosage given in one pill. This dosage was not high enough for me so my doctor prescribed two 36 milligrams pills once a day. I am now on Adderall XR (60 mg a day, highest dose) which is stronger than Concerta. Although, this medication is stronger than Concerta it wears off sooner so I take one dose of 30 milligrams and four hours later another dose of 30 milligrams. It has worked really well for me. This lasts me a good 10 hours. I hope this helps.

If this is in pill form you should not break it up unless your doctor says it is okay. Many pills are control released and if broken will cause a Huge dose to be administered at once. However , my son takes Methelyn for ADHD and we are still playing around with the dose. His is a liquid and we noticed he did much better in the AM , hit a plateu and then was worse than ever in the PM so his doctor said he needed to take it at 8am , 12 noon and then a half dose around 3pm... this has worked much better.
