I really wish some of these people would do some research before answering these questions.
Nissan did not buy Datsun.
Datsun was not the original name.
Renault does not own Nissan, they are partners called the Nissan/Renault Alliance (NRA). Mister Nissan Master Tech.
Nissan has been around since the 30s and when they came to the United States in 1960. the Datsun name was used here because of veterans in WWI. They wanted to have a more Americanized name, so they could sell their cars. The Nissan Name was used in all other parts of the world. Japan had the same cars as here but with different names i.e. Datsun 240z is a Nissan Fairlady in Japan. In 84 they wanted to use the corporate name for all of their vehicles, thats why they changed it over.
"You did in a Datsun, now you can in a Nissan!" was there slogan in 83.
Nissan=Datsun, and thats how they are related!

Nissan Motor Co. is the manufacturing company. Datsun was a model name like Chevrolet is to General Motors. In 1982 they dropped the Datsun name giving their vehicles the corporate name.

long story: DAT existed at first, later changed its name to NISSAN. Nissancreated overseas brand named DATSON but changed it to DATSUN after "son" turned out to mean failure in japanese. datsun was the overseas brand for a long while, serving everywhere but japan (much like acura, infiniti, lexus are the overseas luxury editions of honda, nissan, toyota respecively) the name was dropped in 83 when the brand ran into financial problems, and all datsuns took the name nissan.
short story: datsun is nissan's psuedonym
you're welcome
