We put a small box with wood shavings as a nest, but is there anything we need to do, as you can tellI don't know much a bout these litle birds. The bird was a gift to our 4 year old son..

any info that will help will be great

If you don't have a male, take the eggs away, they will only go bad. But if you have a male, take one egg and check the yolk for a mark on it like a pin prick. The mark will tell you that the egg is fertilized. That's all there is to it.

NO!!. If you touch the egg they could reject. They may reject simply because of it being unfertilized. I would suggest borrowing a book from the library to learn about incubation time so that if it doesn't hatch by in the proper time the egg can be removed so that it doesn't rot. If you are really experienced they are ways of tell if a egg is viable with a flashlight but that is really advanced bird breeding. Basically just let nature do it thing and get a book.

5 or 6 is a good finch clutch.dont let her lay many more or it will start to deplete her bodies nutrients.you can purchase tiny blue fake eggs to fool her into thinking she has enough laid.just leave her and dad in a quiet area an in awhile you will hear peeping from the nest box.drop some string,tissue or lil pieces of paper in the cage for the new parents to improve on the nest.good luck

the eggs wont hatch, because there is no male to fertilize the eggs. sorry
