Normal weaning as it is referred to, generally begins by the age of 6-8 weeks, depending on if the teeth are in, but at this time the pups will still nurse, food should be brought in for the pups as well as water. The puppy food should have warm water added to it until it makes into a softer consistancy. This will help the momma dog to wean her babies. The longer they are permitted to nurse, the healthier they will be, so long as the momma dog is healthy. The mother dog should be separated from her pups when it is time for them to eat their food, this way there is no confusion and the pups learn to eat.

Usually at about four weeks or so you should be able to introduce damp or wetted puppy chow. It could be up to 6 or 8 weeks until they are fully weened. Usually the mother will start the weening process on her own especially if there is another food source available to the pups.

They're usually weaned around 6 weeks, but you should start feeding puppy chow soaked in warm water twice a day at around 4 weeks.
