1 x 14 oz ( 400 g ) tin condensed milk.
Place the totally unopened can in a pan of cold water making sure tin is completely covered. Bring to boil and continue to SIMMER for 3 hours (NO less !) :Leave to cool down. The toffee is now made and can be kept chilled in the unopened can until the date rius out.

large pan two three tins condensed milk cover cold water bring to boil then simmer 2 1/2 to three hours. top up water. DO NOT LET BOIL DRY Cool do NOT open when hot or you could have toffee on ceiling - happenned to a friend!! Will keep for weeks and so many uses Or just sup with spoon - yummy!

We do this to make Banoffee and it takes about 2 hours so needs careful watching so pan doesn't boil dry. Allow tin to cool a bit and put a tea towel over when you first pierce lid as it sometimes spurts out.
Saw this idea but haven't tried it - gently melt 6 oz butter, 6 oz caster sugar in pan stir until sugar melts then add condensed milk. Boil steadily for 5 mins - think probably need to keep stirring to stop it catching.

It has to be 3 hours, keep topped up with boiling water and be careful when opening. Mmm I could do with some myself now.

i learn something new every day at yahoo answers. i didn't know you could make toffee that way. and i'm 60years old. who would have "thunk it" now i'm being silly. oh well at least i know how to make toffee now.

Maybe empty it in a pot - needs a lot of stirring - 10 to 15 mins but you can also add butter to make it yummier. Stir a lot longer -30 mins (and add a cup of sugar in the beginning) and you will have fudge.

I usually do it for 40 mins in pressure cooker or 2hours or so in regular pot
