The devil did not obtain any power but retains the power of the fallen Archangel Lucifer -damned by God.Since the devil has no access to any new power or knowledge he has to try to obtain it from man, who is not damned and is given life power from God and renewed by life and nature constantly.Since man is given power from God the devil is able to discern part of Gods plan through man, even though man is mostly unaware being a less intelligent creature.
The origin of Lucifer's power as the devil comes after he was defeated by the forces of God.Lucifer requested that he be allowed to be the ruler of Hell.God allowed this.
This is the origin of the contest between good and evil in the world.

The power he seems to have comes from the masses who give no thought to his existence. They do what comes naturally to them - sin. He has deceived them into thinking that sin is good and fun, or they should at least try to get away with it and hope not to get caught.

He has power because he has convinced people that God doesn't exist, and even if He does He has no right to tell humans how to live and has no authority over them. He has also convinced them that when things go horribly wrong in this world, it's all God's fault.

The problem in North America is that, because our high standard of living and education, we have convinced ourselves that we are too smart to believe in God. So over the past several decades, people have been shunning God and getting laws passed that say mentioning God and the Bible is not appropriate in our society given it's multicultural status. We must respect everyone, although it seems that a belief in the God of the Bible and His written instructions to us are excluded. Other religions and other lifestyles can hold huge community events and no one gets upset, but they complain loudly if Bible-believing people do.

Even children are being taught that God and the Bible are irrelevant. They can be taught or get involved in activities of other faiths and lifestyles, but not if it has anything to do with the Bible.
