Bitter apple spray isnt going to work, and even if it did you would just confuse him. No spraying with water either, he will associate his annoyance with you.

When dealing witha bad puppy, do as the mama dog would do. Pick him up by the scruff of the neck (support his butt), look him square in the eyes and give him a menacing growl.

After correcting him, you need to give him something he CAN chew on. I suggest buying about $20 worth of toys at your local pet store. If he has toys that entertain him, he will stay away from your shoes : )

This brings back memories of our wienie dog Sugar who died in January of this year. We adopted her as an older dog and she chewed all the insoles out of our shoes. Everyone's shoes. We put all our shoes in a basket and made everyone responsible for their own. She chewed because she was new to our home and nervous. The previous owner had pretty much beaten her for anything she did. Bitter Apple did not work. We finally put her in a kennel for short periods of time with a toy that was all her own and as she became more used to our home, she stopped chewing. She rubbed her nose nearly off though by being in the kennel because she hated it so much.

Bitter Apple.

Bitter Apple is a nasty spray made of vinegar and alum that no animal in its right mind will chew. Alternatives are vinegar, hot mustard, tobasco sauce.

It helps to keep shoes out of the way, and provide alternative things that your puppy can chew. He needs to teeth on something and it is up to you to provide it. Rawhide bones are good, though if he is very young with very pointed teeth, they will be beyond him for a while. Get something suitable from a pet store. (And keep your shoes put up.)

You can also get a "kong" which is a roughly cylindrical hollow rubber toy into which you can put a dab of cream cheese or peanut butter, and will keep your puppy busy for a while.

If chewing is a big problem, make sure to spray bitter apple on any loose wires, or anything else that might get his attention.

Have you a shake can? Get an empty can with a snap on lid (or you have to close it shut with duct tape) and put in some rocks or beans. They quickly associate the noise of the shaken can with bad behavior--and it saves them from associating your voice with punishment.

All puppies chew - a lot. For now, unless you're there to keep an eye on him, put the shoes away. When you're with him, simply give him a firm no when he goes for a shoe, give him lots of praise the second he leaves the shoe, and give him a toy to chew on to replace it. With lots of praise for correct behaviour, he'll soon learn to leave the shoes alone, but while he's real young or teething, best to put them away.

Put them where he can't get hold of them as well as everything else you don't want destroyed and if you're too lazy to do that then take the shoe away and say Bad Dog then hand him a piece of rawhide to chew instead.

Put your shoes out of reach and give him a healthy bone for him to chew on. Maybe get min a dental bone so he can have good teeth while he is doing something he loves. If he gets into your shoes make sure you discipline him. If you don't discipline him he won't know he is doing something wrong.

Keep all the shoes out of his reach and redirect his chewing need to something of his own...maybe a Nylabone or a Kong.
