Sit ups help your back and your ads. Flattening the tummy will come with sit ups but only if you are able to maintain a good for you weight. Sit ups won't flatten a stomach that is too fat. I am speaking from personal experience and from my knowledge as a past fitness instructor.

Sit ups (full sit ups) are not good for your back, and they do not accurately isolate the abdominal muscles. Crunches, reverse crunches, and exercises which focus on "core muscles" are better at "flattening the tummy". The benefits of such are also to decrease strain on your back, help prevent back injury, and help clothing to fit better all around, in addition to flattening your tummy.

Not full sit-ups but lifting to tighten your stomach is enough, be careful not to lift too high then you could hurt your back.

If they are done correctly, leg lifts do well and vary your work out. It tightens your body core and helps your back and your posture.
