Yes. The cast system prevents people from moving between the social stratas. The social stratas determine the wealth, status in society, perception among others, and success. The mobility to upper stratas is limited by blood.

A very interesting question. I will try to answer in intelligently.
As I understand it, the sociological function of The Indian Cast System is not to discriminate, but to divide society into classes to prevent mimetical desires.
Mimetical desires exist between people who have the same opportunities. It something like jealousy and envy. But mimetical desires only function if there is some resemblance (especially in opportunities) between two persons. For example; you would be sooner inclined to be jealouse of your brother or sister for having something you dont then be jealous on Puff Dady for buying a one million dollar yacht. This is because you know you cant buy a million dollar yacht.
In order to release the stress of mimetical desires the Indians have designed their society around casts. While within casts rivalry and jealousy exists. Between them this is not the case. Relieving the society from a great deal of conflict.
I hope this answer is of any help.

The general population here are not racist against anyone. I am in my 50's now, and I know there is long established respect for Indians, particularly for the large number of Indian doctors here. What I have seen in the last 15 years is a surge in particular ethnic groups of young thugs who don't integrate into our culture. These fight between themselves, are aggressive towards Australians, and on some occasions, as has happened recently, they target individuals including Indians in random attacks. There were riots a few years ago between Lebanese and Vietnamese groups. Another time there was rioting and vandalism between Lebanese gangs from western Sydney and Australians from the surfing culture of one beach area. The Lebanese thugs claimed to represent the muslim religion, but that view was not shared by the peace loving muslim families here. I suggest you make enquiries about the region where you plan to live, as most places in Australia never experience these things, and we have a long-standing mutual respect with you guys.

The Cast system is discrimination based on social class, it is not race since India is one race.It is based on what family or clan you are born into and locks people into the same economic class as their parents. It is very limiting, in the same way apartheid was.
