I read an article in Yahoo news about two months ago, and wish I still had a link to it to send to you, but the gist of the article was that a great many schizophrenics who survive into their 40s and 50s do seem to spontaneously "get better"... sometimes even totally better, as if they never had schizophrenia. The article stated that about a third of schizophrenics will develop some kind of complete dementia by that age, another third will have a near total remission (the only side effect being mild chronic depression) and another third will be completely and spontaneously cured. There was this famous case of some genius mathematician who had schizophrenia all his life, got into his fifties and it completely went away. He said he remembered being schizo and what that was like, but that it seemed like it was happening to a different person. The guy was normal and happy and well adjusted and all those other positve adjectives and adverbs after his remission. There are now psychiatrists who believe that schizophrenia may just be some kind of bizarre developmental "glitch" where certain parts of the brain develop at different rates than they should, and that if you survive early schizophrenia those brain parts eventually catch up to the rest of the brain and "Voila!". You are cured! But they don't know why for sure. Hope you make it!

Schizophrenia will not necessarily "get better". If the person is unmedicated, he/she will find that the symptoms of schizophrenia can be better managed with medication. Medication can help to reduce the often frightening auditory and visual hallucinations and delusions that many people suffering from schizophrenia experience. The sooner you start a treatment regimine (medication, therapy), the better. It also helps A LOT to have support from family and friends! :)

Not really the meds help for sure but that is all you can expect. Got friends that have the same and they see no different now they are older.
