They are ok, but i'd suggest something else ... like a bearded collie! Those are smart and nice, but no dog is perfect
If you are considering a dog, try and get your family to meet it first!

I've never seen a cocker that was good around children. Because of their popularity, Cockers have been bred a lot by back yard breeders who don't breed for the AKC standard, let alone temperament. If you do choose a cocker, look for a reputable breeder....perhaps one that has been breeding for years to better the breed, not just to breed dogs assembly line fashion for more bucks. Look for a out going puppy, not a shy puppy and if possible meet the parents of the pup to get an idea of their temperaments. Not all cockers are bad, you just have to be selective and careful with your choice to get a child safe one.

No. They are not good dogs for children and sometimes adults. I had a cocker spaniel, and I loved him SO much but I ended up having to put him down because he kept biting me. I got him because I knew someone who had a cocker and it was such a sweet dog but apparently, that is the exception rather then the rule. The vet told me that cocker's were bred for their looks not their temperment and therefor tend to be bean. Also, my cocker had TONS of health problems (eye & ear infections all the time).

Cocker spaniels as a breed do make excellent pets for children and adults alike, but you want to watch out for any genetic issues they may have. Cockers are prone to skin conditions and genetic aggression disorders. They can also be tempermental. If you have smaller children, you may want to seriously consider looking into another breed just to be on the safe side.
If you still plan on purchasing your cocker and using a breeder (as opposed to a rescue), be sure the breeder is reputable. Ask them about the bloodlines they work with and whether or not any of the dogs they have sold have had a history of aggression. Ask them for references from previous buyers as well as their veterinarian. Be sure they include a health guarantee against genetic defects in their contract.
Once you get your pup, be sure to work on socialization and obedience training from the very beginning.

when i was a teenager my best friend had a cocker spaniel nice dog lovely natured, i believe this is common in the breed although the were traditionally gun dogs they do make good family pets, unless it is young children that enjoy poking it in the eye but this is true of any breed, so ask yourself will my children mistreat the dog or are they older than that if your kids are young enough to be bad to the dog no breed is safe and it isnt the dog thats at fault it is just reacting naturally to pain stimulus

I have a male Lhasa Apso. he's taking some thing that my 5 year previous and a million year previous dish out on him! Pulling of the ears hair, poking each and every thing. I breed them and performance had everybody come back and tell me an same ingredient about the breed. they don't seem that small like a Chi or a poodle yet no longer too large that they take in a lot of room and ought to't be comfortable sufficient on your lap. they don't SHED thats a huge plus like Pugs do. they don't seem overly hyper. they prefer to play fetch... One draw again is they choose brushed on a daily basis or saved clipped down so that they don't mat. desire this helps. also yet another type of dogs is Mini Shcnauzer. My freind will advance them and also runs a daycare.... they getr alongside nicely with youthful little ones also.

NO! Cocker Spanial's are not good dogs if you have children. They are very tempermental and attack often. My friend had one, I hated that dog.

it depends on how old the kids are...cockers aren't known to be the friendliest dogs around children. And are you prepared to spend a ton of money on them to get them groomed and to keep their ears clean? They have a lot of health problems as they get older...my parents have one and she is really expensive.
call your local animal shelter, they can match you up with a great dog who will be perfectr for your family...and you will be saving a life and not spending a ton!
Blessed Be
