I reserved a Carnival Cruise for July of next year with a level 8 balcony stateroom and my travel agent talked me into not reserving a specific room and opting into a plan if there is a suite available they will upgrade me. What I want to know is if anyone has done this before and if it works?

I am travel agent and I would say it works at least 50% of the time. It is a great option to do... You don't need to know your room number ahead of time and if there is a chance to get a suite...

there is really no rhyme or reason to trying to figure out upgrades when you book a gty room. Sometimes you get the cat that you booked, other times you get a decent upgrade. Another thing to do is watch for price drops. For example I booked a cat 4 gty. I found out I was assigned a room at a 4c. I checked the prices and saw that they went down and the cat 6 gty was the same price now as the cat 4gty when I booked. I called my TA and they gave me a 6b. Moral of the story, keep an eye on the prices and use price changes to your advantage.

It depends on how full they are and during the summer they are pretty full with families who often want a suite to accommodate their kids. General speaking, suites do sell out way in advance so an upgrade is less likely to happened compared to getting an upgrade when you book a much lower deck. Good luck.

i've reserved on a guarantee twice and was upgraded from an inside cabin to an oceanview both times. the last time, though, we had to wait until their no-show list before we were assigned a cabin. it was very frustrating. after that, i'm not sure i will do it again.

I have been on 2 cruises and they upgraded us both times. We purchased a guarenteed ocean view and they upgraded us to balcony. It was pretty sweet!!!!!
