Because if they could convert, it would show what a sham it is.

Well there is no need to convert this is the final cut so to speak Islam is the Only Faith Allah will except meaning you be live there is one God and the Prophet Muhammed was the last and final Prophet. You cannot go back on truth it has been perfected for Muslims if you do convert your an apostate in the Religion... the plenty is death........ Allah knows best Islam is perfect and what this world needs. Allah (swt) is the only God to be served ,

It was based on misinterpretation of the Quran and Sunnah for selfish desires (not uncommon).
See, how this first came about was that during the time of the Prophet Muhammad, people were trying everything they could to stop him from spreading the Word of God. One of their tricks was to pretend that they were a Muslim for a short while, long enough to penetrate the community and attempt to disband it from the inside. After completing their mission it was back to whatever they were before. So this law came to be that whoever decided to leave Islam would face punishment. This was not only to scare anyone considering this type of sneakiness(for lack of better word, lol), but it also made people who were sincerely considering converting to Islam to research and learn as much as they could about it before embracing it.
It is no longer practiced (or shouldn't be) because this was declared under the Prophet, really no one else has the authority. Now people use this as a means of gaining power, wealth and respect, even if through fear. It's horribly unfortunate, but extremely common in the "Muslim" world for people to do this type of thing.
From the Quran:
18:29 And say: "The truth [has now come] from your Sustainer: let, then, him who wills, believe in it, and let him who wills, reject it."
2:256 Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.
42:48 But if they turn away [from thee, O Prophet, know that] We have not sent thee to be their keeper: thou art not bound to do more than deliver the message [entrusted to thee]. And, behold, [such as turn away from Our mesÂsages are but impelled by the weakness and inconÂstancy of human nature: thus,] when We give man a taste of Our grace, he is prone to exult in it; but if misfortune befalls [any of] them in result of what their own hands have sent forth, then, behold, man shows how bereft he is of all gratitude!

the same its not allowed to convert in Christianity ,in my country when a christian girl converted to Islam ,her family kicked her out and wanted to kill her .
in Islam not everyone who convert to other religion ,should be killed ,there is rule called al estataba , u know the converting issue goes under topic called alfaqqaa so if u want to know more u should ask Muslim scholar about that as if a person convert but didn't announce it and didn't encourage ppl in Islamic society to convert too ,its OK to convert

Whoa, scary. I guess Afghanistan is just really strict in religion matters *.*
I'm sure you are allowed to convert.
But being a Muslim myself, if you truly love God and do good for others for His sake and give to your neighbour what you love for yourself and have strong faith (that doesn't mean becoming an extermist! too much of anything is bad for you!) then you wouldn't want to convert because life just seems good to be Muslim.
As far as i know though, Muslims are allowed to convert, but i don't see why they would.
Oh well...God guides whom he chooses..

First of all, Peace to u. also, thanx for inquiring abt my Religion 'Islam'.
A Muslim is Not allowed to Convert, 'coz if ALLAH (GOD) has guided the person to The Path of The Truth, then why does he turn his back to it? i know most of u wont get my point. but what i m trying to say is, a person like that is a Traitor to The Islam and The Entire Muslim Community, and the punishment for Treason has always been Death. Now, most of u will be wondering, why m i calling such a person a 'Traitor'? its because, u usually find ex-Muslims to be staunchest of critics (Even Enemy) of Islam and fellow Muslims, they spread misconception and misinformation on the basis of those things that they weren't able to understand, and instead of asking for someone's help to clearify them, they instead turn their back towards Islam and walk away from it. and, when they are out, on the basis of those things they didn't understand they criticize Islam harshly, and even make other weak Muslims (Muslims whose Beliefs are Not Strong) go their way and turn away from Islam.
So, the penalty of death is NOT 'coz they turned their back from Islam, But its because they conspire to even turn others (weak Muslims) away from Islam, instead of letting them firm their belief by asking those who firmly belief and know abt Islam (True Muslims). And, mostly these are the ppl who commit Blasphemy abt Islam and insult the Muslim Community, causing Muslims great grief on both accounts.
i hope i gave u a clear answer. Peace to All.

Mind-boggling question, but I guess it's their way of 'saving their faces' from such a scandal. I've read the qu'ran in part, but didn't find any writing in there that prohibits them (Muslims) from converting to another religion.

Same reason the Catholic church condemned those that would dare to want to go to another church during the dark ages. They wanted to keep them in darkness and not have them know the real truth as is the case with the muslims today.

may be u should do some study before making a bold statement.
and who said that there is no freedom in islam. if someone does that, then they can do what they wish too. it is upto that person and Allah to decide, no man can judge another person, only Allah has the right. this verse says that only Allah will decide their fate.
Al-Baqara | 286 verses | The Cow سÙرة اÙبÙرة
Sura #2 | Madina
256 Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.
257 Allah is the Protecting Guardian of those who believe. He bringeth them out of darkness into light. As for those who disbelieve, their patrons are false deities. They bring them out of light into darkness. Such are rightful owners of the Fire. They will abide therein.
all man can say to such person is -- live and let live -- as the following surah tells u.
Al-Kafiroon | 6 verses | The Disbelievers سÙرة اÙÙاÙرÙÙ
Sura #109 | Makkah
1 Say: O disbelievers!
2 I worship not that which ye worship;
3 Nor worship ye that which I worship.
4 And I shall not worship that which ye worship.
5 Nor will ye worship that which I worship.
6 Unto you your religion, and unto me my religion.
also Allah says that if someone insults u or ur religion, then do the following. true muslim under no circumstances will ever commit atrocities in the name of Allah and Islam. right now the bayan (sermon) i usually give at mosque starts with this.
Aal-e-Imran | 200 verses | The family of Imran سÙرة آ٠عÙ
راÙ
Sura #3 | Madina
200 O ye who believe! Endure, outdo all others in endurance, be ready, and observe your duty to Allah, in order that ye may succeed.
Al-Muzzammil | 20 verses | The enshrouded one سÙرة اÙÙ
زÙ
Ù
Sura #73 | Makkah
10 And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking.
dont give a damn about any imaam or mullah, they are men not God that i should be scared of, most of them are corrupted idiots who lust for power, land and money. infact i wish that all corrupted clerics of all religions and all corrupted politicians, who are misusing their responsibilites given to them, be thrown out. it also includes people who plundered the whole world in name of trade, EIC and those who say 'u r either with us or with the terrorists'.
