If it's hanging on the "Compress old files" part of the scan, try this:

Are you sure it's not working or is it just taking a long time reading "compressing old files". I learned a trick from TechRepublic - just let it run and when it does finally start up, there is an option to uncheck the "compress old files", it will work after that (it took me almost 2 hours before mine got to that point). use xp disk as you would to do a normal install at the instalation screen pick repair windows leave file system as it is this will re install windows but leave your files as they are on the computer
all that will not be available are any udates that you installed due to your windows being back to its original install DONOT pick the change file system or your drive will be auto formatted that is a clean install that destoys all on the hard drive you will still need your serial number to re install

a system restore would be worth trying first,restore to before you started having the clean up problems
