Before allowing him access to your own animals (even if it's just going to be a temporary thing), be sure you take the new pup to the vet to be screened for any communicable illnesses. While he's there, ask the veterinarian to scan him for a microchip. If the dog is chipped, the vet or you can call the company and try to track down the owner.
You should also contact your local animal control and humane societies, either in person or via phone, and let them know you found a puppy. Give them a description of the dog and the location it was found so that they can try to match it up with any notifications of lost dogs they receive. Be sure to give them any specific identifying marks--white mark on chest, front two white feet, blue eyes, etc. The shelter will be sure to ask the right questions of potential owners to be sure they're the right ones and not someone posing as the owner.
If you don't want to take the animal to your home or don't plan on keeping it for more than a day or two, animal control can pick it up from your home (usually not on weekends though), or you can bring the pup to them or to the local Humane Society.
Good luck.

I always pick them up so they don't get hit by a car or mistreated. If the area isn't "bad", I'll knock on a couple doors to see if I can find the owner. Then...either home or directly to a shelter...depending on if the shelter is open.
I already have three dogs, and I'm a sucker for strays. I can't keep them...or I'd end up on television as that weird old woman with the 20 dogs, 15 cats, 3 pot bellied pigs, and a host of birds, reptiles and sundry furry things.

I'd bring him home and notify animal control of where I'd found the puppy. It's physical description, color and markings and leave my name and address so owners could pick it up as well as best time to call about the dog.
I've done this several times in the past and owners are especially appreciative that their pup was kept in a home where it had a pleasurable experience rather than possibly be traumatized by being grabbed and caged and left to sit alone with other frightened, confused animals around it.
If you absolutely cannot keep the dog then have animal control come get it otherwise after 24 hrs. it may be considered YOUR property.

Well I would start by calling the local shelter and tell them I found a puppy. Then I would take it to the vet to see if it has been chipped to find its owners. If nothing comes up I would keep the puppy and take him to the vet the make sure he is healthy and get his shots.
But if I wasn't able to keep him I would take him to the shelter (No kill shelter) so he could find a good home.

You take it to the shelter, unless you can commit to the proper care of the dog. Do not mix it with your dogs until it has been to the vet. Viruses,fleas,worms,mange....all kind of things can be wrong with a stray that you would not want to introduce to your house. If you do not have the money to get everything done for the puppy, take it to a shelter.

I found a stray puppy on the street before, so i took it to the nearist police station to see what they said.
They rang up the dogs home and told them we would be on our way, So we took the stray puppy to the dogs home where he was kept until they found a new owner for him.

Take him home, poor thing. I would put an ad in the paper saying you found him (it's free with almost all papers) with a very vague description. Then, wait for calls, and before they see him, make them identify him over the phone. That way you don't get any wierdoes trying to take him.
Oh, and give him lots of treats adn hugs.

In my area, our shelter has a found pet log where you can list the description and area where you found the puppy. Also you could have your vet scan him to see if he's micro-chipped. If you can't keep him, check with your local rescue groups.
