I wish I had an answer for this as my children didn't seem to start talking until 2 1/2. But I would say that if they are not driving you nuts talking when they are 16 months, I would have thier hearing tested for possible low hearing.

It depends on the child and each one is different. There's a saying that if a child walks first, then they talk later and vice versa. This was true for my son who walked at 11 months, but didn't really start talking until between 2 and 2 1/2 years old. I say that he really started talking at 2 1/2 because it seemed like almost over night that he started using sentences and aksing about things.
If your child is not talking AT ALL by age 2, I would talk to a doctor about it. It's not uncommon for a 2 year old to only use single or two word sentences.

child seems to be normal in every other way. child uses hand gestures quite often to communicate what he wants.

If a child is not saying around 5 words by 18 months...fairly plain....then some pediatricians say you should look into a speech therapist. Most of the time you will find out that the child more than likely does not have speech problems, but instead just a refusal to 'verbally' communicate. A lot of times it is because the child does not have to verbally communicate, because the parents or siblings will allow the child to 'point' or 'grunt' if they want something. Most children decide by 2 years of age that they want to talk and the problem takes care of itself. Remember every child is different and each will progress at their own level.....don't compare your child to your first child or your best friend's child.

There is no norm.
My mother said I was talking in complete sentences by the time I was 1.
My daughter about 20 months.
My son didn't start talking until about 3 1/2. He didn't have to. His sister knew everything he wanted. As soon as she went to school I would sit and talk to him about what he would watch on TV. That kind of got him started. Then I told him that if he wanted something he had to use his words. After a few days of not getting his favorite snack he began to speak more and more.
Now of course I can't keep him quiet. (we now have volume control issues.)
Don't worry too much. They will start when they are ready.
My son is now 9 and in third grade and is reading and doing work on the 5th grade level.
Just keep reading to your child everyday and make sure to keep up with his regular doctors on his well checks.

By 18 months, our doc wanted our son to say 9 words. That he said the word once and never again was enough for the doc.
They really care about receptive speech - does the child understand what is said to him/her? That's most important.
Some kids start babbling up a storm before 2. Our oldest was very thoughtful and spoke in long complicated sentences, (still does), so he talked later. Hasn't stopped since he got going.

A child should start saying some simple words around 12-18m. After 2 years, they should have a reasonable vocabulary like 100 words or so. After 3, they can "talk" with 5-6 word sentences.
Just doesn't "talk" doesnt mean anything, Einstein didn't speak 'til 4 and the parents thought there was a problem. You have to see if the child understands what you are saying. Ask him to bring you the ball, if he does correctly, that means he can hear and understand you. You should bring attention to the child's pediatrician if you are concerned. I belive there are learning centers that encourage kids to speak more.

Average age to start talking is around 1 somewhere. At 2 my son did not talk at all, and our pediatrician said now is the time to send him to specialists to see if anything is wrong. So with my HMO, 2 is when you should see a professional. The only professional that can legally diagnose him as any kind of disorder that is language related is a speech-language pathologist. So that is where I would go. Mine sent me to a regional center which gives free therapy called early intervention- basically they dont know exactly whats wrong but give therapy anyway because the earlier they get help the better off they are later. the therapy is fun too - its just playing and games.

By age 2 1/2, the average child has a vocabulary of about 600 words, by age 5 or 6 that number rises to about 15,000 words, an increase of 10 words a day. By 3 years of age, most children have all the basic tools needed to form sentences and make conversation. Most 18 to 20 month olds will use 1 and 2 word sentences. By 24 months, the longest sentences include 4 and 5 words. By 30 months, sentence length will double again.

A child starts talking at about age 1 1/2. If the child isnt talking by age three, there may actually be something wrong with the childs hearing. You can get in touch with some one from Family Connections and they can tell you anything you need to know and get you hooked up with someone that can help your child. I am actually working with them right now with my son.
