You can find a bunch of programs at http://www.freebyte.com/music .

Many of these are free! Try a few out and find what best suits your needs.

If it's a MID or MIDI file, you can use any of a number of different programs to convert it to notation. My favorite is Noteworthy Composer.

If you have a midi-capable keyboard and plug it into the computer, Noteworthy will convert what you play in real-time. (I've never used it for this purpose, but the option is available).

If it is in any other format, it's like asking if you could separate the eggs from a cake. It can't be done.

midi is the compact computer file format needed to use several programs that will write perfect sheet music. There are several programs to convert .wav to .midi but you will have your work cut out for you separating the voices. There are many .midi files out there on the web that have been through 20 or more revisions in the .midi format. I used a trial program called midiNotate from downloads.com to try it out.

.midi files were my favorite downloads. They are like instrumentals of some of my favorite rock music but the property rights associated with .mp3 downloads has shut down many .midi file web sites.

I use Finale. I have a small keyboard and play the tune in and it converts it. Pretty fun!
