No....not the last fight, where Hagler came to left in last 3 rounds. He was winded and looked in command of sugar ray.

Ray won the fight and an extra three rounds would have made no difference. Ray trained for 12 if it went 15 he would have won those as well.

Lets go back in time people thought that Hagler would have won that fight for the reasons supplied. Ray had not fought in three years and just beat a very good fringe welterweight contender who put him down he managed to win but at a cost.

He had not fought in awhile and was hesitant to mix it up, the trauma of having a detached retina made him cautious and created doubts which surfaced.

Hagler was a step up because he was the bigger man. Physically stronger, with a hard punch. If a moderate too very good fighter could knock him down, they thought what could Hagler do.

He signed the contract stipulating certain things. Gloves with no thumbs exposed, the ring size. Its customary for the champ who has the final word on what size the ring is, a puncher would favour a smaller ring. When Jack Dempsey was the challenger he wanted a smaller ring 16 x 16 Gene Tunney wanted a 24 x 24 ring and he got it. The final word went to the champ. Leonard dictated the fight outside and inside the ring. Gene Tunney fought two 10 round fights with Jack Dempsey at a time when it was 20 rounds. Joe Louis had signed to fight a 20 round fight with Buddy Baer he ended it in one.

The gloves gave the impression that Leonard still had fears and even some boxing organisations from which Hagler represented as the champion wouldn't sanction the fight for fear of the fight tarnishing thier reputations and being dangerous to actually approve off. They thought he would get seriously hurt, how would he react to being hit hard and often. Whether he was up to the challenge, physically fit and mentally was he in the right frame of mind to take this fight. All valid questions.

The distance has nothing to do with the fact that he was beaten by the better fighter. We can hypotehsie about what could ahve been if Wilfredo Bentitez lasted two more seconds, if Tommy Hearns did this would they have lasted and beaten Sugar Ray Leonard. Hey I was cheering for Tommy and I'm a Benitez fan but the point is the fight was for 12 rounds ample opportunity for Hagler to win the fight.

Hagler fought a tough man who physically outmuscled him and he tried to do the one thing you shouldn't do fight another man's fight. Out box a boxer he lost. He underestimated Leonard and drew into the hype of how much of a great boxer he was, he was very good but leonard was better, he couldn't hurt him, Leonard took his best shots he couldn't out box him and he definitely couldn't outmuscle him.

sorry to say this, but Ray would have still whooped him. As I fighter and a wrestler, I HATE when people say, if this was different, or that was different, things would be different. For the most part, small rule changes don't mean a damn thing. People who tell me, "OK, you out wrestled me, but if we fought it'd be different." Yeah I can fight too. My point is, the fight was SET FOR 12!!! Be ready to fight 12... not 9 not 15... 12!!! To speculate and say Leonard would have lost a 15. Fine. But it is not true. The point is simpler than my over talk. Hagler knew the rules long before the fight, after the fight is over, no one should go back and say "what if" in this situation. If Hagler could win in 15, he should have done it in 12, the way he understood it to be.

Hagler would win a decision if the fight went 15 rds.
Hagler with his ego settled for 12 rds, a big ring and even bigger gloves. This is what Hagler thought, I'll give him everything he wants and still beat him (WRONG).

Yes. He would simply have paced himself for 15 rounds.
Doesn't matter what distance they fought over, Ray would still have outclassed Hagler. And I hate saying that.
