YES! Science was stalled for hundreds of years because of fear of burning for heresy. Even now, people are still trying to squash scientific discovery because it may discover something conflicting to their religious beliefs...global warming, evolution, genetic testing...

I believe that what is known as "organized" religion is all too often a tremendous distraction (minimization) of Universal (quantum) Truth, of which we are all a part. I used to say that Catholocism is "the greatest con ever perpetrated upon humanity"; however, I now believe this to be true of most so-called organized religions as presented to the unsuspecting or complacent human masses, based on an analogy with which I agree: There was a village inhabited by blind people who had heard of a tremendous creature called "elephant" (a.k.a., "religion"), and they summoned their three wisest elders to go forth into the world for the purpose of discovering exactly what an elephant might be and then return to the village as teachers. Each wise elder ventured forth in a different direction and each encountered a different aspect of this mysterious creature called elephant---one a trunk, one a hind leg, and one the vibrations of heavy step and loud trumpeting, so each returned to teach their version (each one adamant their version of what constitutes an elephant is the complete truth, and each equally unaware of any deficiency in their version of what they deemed "truth" but judging the others' versions to be erroneous and/or untrue). It is thus with modern-day religions.

If a person chooses to look at life through a "we're born, we live, and then we die" perspective, then yes...religion or anything spirit related becomes a distraction. For anyone that thinks this life is the finality of living, one has to cling to it and all the things, good or bad, that is in it. When people tie their faith in God to their specifically chosen religious group, then they stand the chance of being led astray. Religion is a mere guide book to something superceding it. Religion is the training wheels to a belief in God, it's God's way of teaching you to lean on him and know him. Granted, He uses events, people, thoughts, etc. in your life to do the same thing but religion is a way to gather people, our distant brothers and sisters, that are going through the same things as to help one another through this turbulant existence, kind of like a family meeting. Religion isn't a distraction unless you make an idol out of it.

I am hoping that I interpreted your question correctly. Yes, religion is a distraction. Our beliefs are a part of us, but they are not who we are. They are not in our DNA. It is good to explore and investigate other people and other philosophies. There are many truths out there. Doesn't it only improve your quality of life
to discover new ideas? If we close our minds and reject anything new than we will stagnate and stunt the growth of our lives and our souls.

Hasn't religion been the cause of all major wars? Then and now? I don't know about distraction of truth, we will always question our existence anyway.

You're saying you don't believe it? There are millions just like you, but it is kind of like athiests asking questions in the religious section, if they don't believe this stuff why don't they just ignore it and go the the sports section? If you think the Bible is a distraction to your concept of truth then just read another book and go your way. Learn to be tolerant of those who believe different than you and the world will be a much better place.

"Pure religion" notably paid a "visit" to those "afflicted" with a bad case of life + death (grace + law), and such Grace unto you from God our Father notably arrived "undefiled" and "remained unspotted" in it's come and go visitation to you all. James 1:27.

Pure religion (pure grace) in-vovles kNOWing the truth, which makes you FREE of believing the lies of law law antichrist folk.

No God, Know Problem.
Know God, No Problem.

He taketh away the first,
that he might establish the second.

Only thing established by both an oxyMORON with BAD end.
No such BAD end in the end of the Holy Bible already written:

The "grace" of our Lord Jesus Christ [is] with you all. Amen.

Yes. To me 'religion' is a political organization trying to force their beliefs upon others while simultaneously trying to keep members of their religion non-questioning about things.

Spirituality is what I believe in; studying religious texts from all over, philosophy, even myth and folklore.

No religion itself is not. There can be many good aspects of religion.

However, blind faith in religion is in fact the greatest distraction from truth.
