You should read the bible in its entirety once. Yes, you might as well stick with your original assumption. The bible may be ridiculous in the way that people believe the stories are a direct report from a supernatural entity and how it gets used by people to control the thinking of others. If you look at it from a different perspective, you might be able to see the bible content as thought provoking instead of ridiculous. The bible stories are not the problem; it's what the desperate, the simple-minded, or fascist-minded do with it that is the problem.

All I remember from rading the bible is:
The Old Testament> The tribe of Israel smiting some tribe or other like the Moabites or the Gideonites.
The New Testament> Incomprehensible statements like "That the meek would inherit the world" or "Pushing camels through eyes of needles"
The Acts of the Apostoles> Long discussions about whether Christian converts needed to be circumcised or not.
Bottom line much of the bible is pretty obscure and frankly of little relevance to everyday life. It only takes any meaning if you read a concordance which is basically someone's interpretation of what the bible says. These can be highly biased and pushing extremist views. If you are interested in it as a historical document then you would probably better of reading academic books about it - I think these are much more interesting and much more readable.

Try reading Proverbs, people from many religions and philosophies have agreed with the sage advice given there. Also Eccelsiastes is an interesting philosphical book. The other books may be hard to believe for some, but most everyone can find something useful in the two mentioned above.

I always thought that a little while ago. I read the bible because it was the right thing to do and it was a complete waste of time when I look back at it now. I was given this advise that I am going to tell you.
To be honest, I really don't want to say this but this is what was said to me...
If you read it and it does nothing for you, then what's the point in reading it. Stop reading it, Don't bother wasting your time doing something just because you should.
But I was also then told,
If you want God to speak to you then read the bible and pray. Reading the bible is one of the main ways God will speak to you through. If you have a query or trouble, look to the bible. It is full of the answers God knows we need.
Before a while ago, I also felt this way but now I actually want to read the bible. Before you read the Bible, you should always pray to God and ask him to speak to you through what you are about to read.
If you find it hard to understand the bible then pray for understanding of what you are going to read. I do and I mostly (not everytime) understand what I read.
Also, It's good to get a good bible. Such as a youth bible or a children's bible.
If you want to know where to begin reading, I would say John and Psalms. Read one bit of john and one bit of Psalms.
best of luck!!!!

I also believe that the Bible was written by men, not by God, but I do believe part of it is true......You see ..... it's like a history book.....it relates the facts, but from the author's perspective, ...... Just like not everything in the history books is true, probably not everything in the Bible is true......
What I believe? I believe there's a God, an afterlife, there's Hell and Heaven, ..... not necessary as material, but maybe as spiritual, places.........I believe in Jesus, and that He came back to life, .....and I believe what He said.....that we should love everyone like we love ourselves.....
Regarding your question......no....I do not believe that you should keep on reading until you will find the Bible believable......but I do believe that you should keep on reading......cause you can't know what new things might come out.....things you never thought about.....things that would make you look at it from a different perspective.....or maybe they won't.....who knows?......
Have you never read a book or seen a movie that ended in a way you did not expect?.........you can't judge the whole book, after you have read probably less than half of it.....so.......Keep on reading.....but with an open mind ........

It should take the average person about a year to read the Bible from Genesis through to Revelation. Try to do so with an open mind. Ignoring others who may try to disuade you from doing so.
The Bible is the most dynamic literary work ever written.

The fact that you find it ridiculous, should have no bearing on whether or if anyone else does.
Your problem is that YOU think you're the center of the universe and everyone should believe as you do. People like that DO have problems believing in a higher power, although most of them are smarter about it, so they are not so transparent.

I gather you've read it, well done, if only you could get the other couple of hundred million ignorant pillocks to do so maybe the world would be a happier more peaceful place. Mr Arafat said something like "Your basically killing each other to see who has the better imaginary friend" Too true

The bible should not be taken literally. You need to interpret what is written. For example, Adam & Eve and the apple. This explains to us what temptation is. We know it is wrong to do something, yet some of us still goes ahead and does it. The Bible gives simple stories and explanations, that's all.
(For the record I am not religious)

Depends on whether on not you want everlasting life. The Bible is "to those who are perishing foolishness" (1Cor 1:18) and it will be until you believe it. God said , "search for me and you will find me when you search for me with all your heart". Personally I would continue to read it, even if it is only for knowledge and literary value. It is one of the most ancient writings that we have on the face of this earth and the moral values exceed everything else written.
