You no longer place your hand on a Bible and swear to tell the truth...
You now just hold up your hand and affirm that the testimony you give will be the truth.

You cannot be compelled to swear to a god. There is an alternate form of swearing in that goes like this, " Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, under penalty of the law?".

I don't think they do that anymore. I was watching a live broadcast of a local murder trial a few weeks ago, and they didn't use a Bible to swear witnesses in. They didn't even say "so help you God."

You have a choice to "Affirm" or to "Swear"
Swearing is on the bible. If you're not a believer, then you do an Affirmation
