I would prefer wood or at least the laminate that looks like hardwood. Carpet wears out in spots, and it leaves indentations when you move furniture - besides the allergy problems and the fact that vacuuming never really gets them clean - it only removes the surface dirt and the deep down dust and dirt stays. I'm in the process of taking all the carpeting out of my house and replacing it with laminate (I"m still in the saving money stages of the project at this point....) and I can't wait to get that nasty carpet out once and for all. I plan to use big area rugs in places where we will be alot, and that way we can toss the rug when it gets old and just buy a new one if we want, but the floors will still be nice even without a throw rug.

It depends on the room.
Areas like kitchens, eating areas and bathrooms should definitely be hard wood (or another hard surface) for sanitary reasons. You can use small areas rugs that can easily be washed, if needed.
High traffic areas are much better with hard wood. They don't stain like carpet, although you can have scuffing in the surface if people walk in with outdoor debris on their shoes.
A family room is well suited for hard wood - especially if you tend to eat in there or entertain frequently. Again, the use of area rugs that can be washed or easily cleaned can keep the floor comfortable and warm.
Bedrooms are the typical place for carpet but if you have allergy problems you should definitely avoid it since it holds a multitude of allergens - even with regular vacuuming and shampooing. Use the hard wood and have a small area rug next to the bed so you can step onto a soft and warmer surface - then put on your house slippers!
Agreed that carpet has better sound deadening qualities than hardwood but other room surfaces, such as upholstered furniture and window treatments can be used to absorb sound just as effectively.

I perfer wood floors to carpeting. Basicly for the
ease of cleaning. Carpets are more work to clean.
You can always add a area rug to your floor to
help with some chill if you don't wear slippers.

Definitely wood, as I live on an Island and there not many made roads.
This means all the dirt and dust comes into the house, and carpets would be a very bad Idea.

I think wood floors are beautiful, but very hard to keep clean. I opt for carpet in my house because it was cheaper than redoing the old floos and carpet is warmer to walk on.

Wood floors, definitely - they help the resale value of a home - they are also less likely to be damaged than carpet.
Also if you have any allergy or sinus problems, wood floors are recommended as they do not harbor dust mites and other allergens.
Pets are another issue - it is easier to clean up pet hair and any accidents off of wood floors.

wood floors are beautiful and easy to keep clean. if your worried about it being cold then just put down area rugs that you can shake out in the yard. The other thing about rugs is they hold odor. If you have pets, fleas are a problem too. So hard floors are probably the best way to go. Just put down area rugs.

We have hardwood floors and carpet.
Wood floors:
* Easier to clean.
* Beautiful.
* Can be scratched or gouged, which requires sanding and refinishing to repair.
Carpets:
* Warmer.
* Much quieter.
* Stains can be difficult to remove.

i "wood" definitely go with wood. last year i replaced my kitchen floor with wood and it looks great. i saw an episode on one of the home improvement shows where they use 3/4" sanded plywood and polyed it, instead of the traditional planks, it was beautiful. i tried this and still i am in "awe" of how it turned out. the project only took a day & half to complete.
