I want a few small children I will be volunteering with at the local YMCA to touch a patch or a button on some basic objects; and have it connected to a computer or PDA that plays the sound. For instance, a child would touch the button on a coffee mug; and would directly hear the sound "coffee mug"? Where can I buy these things inexpensively?
Thanks

Check out the website for the Abilitations catalogue... they specialize in equipment for children with disabilities, and often have computerized equipment that can "speak". Sony also makes some talking, hand-held computers. At the center I work for in CA, we have about 60% of our children in attendance are children with an identified disability, and several have "talking" computers. One had one that only had 4 buttons, and you could change the pictures in it and record voices. Others are more sophisticated and can learn to speak sentences for the child. Also, you can talk to a speech/language pathologist in your area (call the school district or look in the phone book) who may be able to give you names of products they use when working with children with speech impairments. The best for teaching children language, however, is still just talking to them.

If you will be volunteering to help teach these children then you need to be the voice they here. What you need are some picture cards....you can make them yourself realitively in exspensively....clip out pictures in magazines and glue them to index cards. Teach them things alsphabetically.. One day have all your pictures/ words beginning with "A"...and so on. Once you review each card, make sure they repeat the word, this all about recognition, then take them out of order and see if they remember. You do not need any type of device to teach the children when you can use your own voice and make up your own cards.

Never tried it, but I just had the thought of those talking picture frames where you record a message. You could insert a picture of the object, record yourself saying it's name, then have the kids push the button on the picture frame. But- those may be expensive- not sure, I've never bought one!

Why don't you just do it as it's been done by teachers for years... when the child touches the coffee mug, you say "COFFEE MUG"... it works well... and that's why they are called TEACHERS.
