My two year old seems to bump into everything walls, tables etc..
do children at his age have depth perception or should I be concerned about his vision?

Personally, I say your doctor is there to help you and answer your questions. Don't be shy about calling and asking an experts opinion.

However, my 16mo old does the same thing. He's still learning to walk, and quite simply, he doesn't pay attention. He runs around and he tends to stare at the object he's headed towards, not the 17 objects that are in between him and it.

If he wants his ball, he's headed straight for it... as the bird flies... direct from point A to point B. Up till about a month ago, he'd step on or run into whatever was in his path. He's just starting to get the go around concept, but he still tends to ignore stationary objects at times.

But, like I said... Answers is great for opinions, but when it comes to kids, ask the people who really know and went to school to have the right answers.

Good luck!

Depth perception is still developing at this age. Children are not expected to be able to catch a ball coming towards them until about 30-35 months of age, and be able to avoid obstacles in their path when running until 36 months. Other possible difficulties can include eye problems (may want to have their eyes checked) and sensory processing difficulties. Some children who bump into things a lot have problems with their proprioceptive and vestibular processing systems. The proprioceptive system tells your body about it's place in space, how close the body is to an object, how much pressure to put on an object (such as picking up a raspberry- too much pressure, it squishes, too little- it slips out of your fingers). These children are the "bull in the china shop". The vestibular system is located in your inner ear and tells your body about balance and coordination. Of course, it could just be that your little one is in the process of growing, and hasn't adjusted to the length of their legs and the size of their head (which can be hard to balance!) Quell your concerns by going to the doctor with your suspicions and evidence. Good luck!

Also after a growth spurt they can be clutzier b/c they're not used to the new (bigger) size of their body. So they used to be able to be >that< distance from something and not bump into it and now suddenly they do!

That said, I'd highly recommend if you have any concern whatsoever about his vision to contact a developmental optomotrist (not a regular one). There are a handful around the country. They do great work on detailed vision problems, like physical therapy for the eye.

Its normal for a 2 year old to run into everything they are just learning balance and their enviroment yet at the same time its never too early to have his eyes checked just to be on the safe side...plus little kids in glasses look really cute. At a young age it won't have any effect on their social skills...it will just give him something to talk to the other kids about.

Have their eyes checked. Usually it has to do with developing motor skills and coordination. The doctor can rule out vision issues.

wel my son is three and just had his first eye exam and he is visually impaired just not bad ebough for glasses yet. talk to his doctor they will test his eyes and tell you what to do next. if you or his dad has a vision correction just go straight to the optometristand get his eyes checked it is possible that your child has bad vision go ahead and get it checked the sooner the better. most kids get the first eye exam before they start school

Kids at this age tend to be klutzie, however to put any fears you may have to rest, take him the the pediatrician and have his eyes checked.
