I wouldn't, but if you feel that way, blame it on your girl Eve for eating that apple.

I think that you are on the right track..but I'm not sure that selfishness is the word I would use...or that it is the only problem involved. I think a lot of the problems are just so immense that an individual can't be even a drop in the bucket to help. I would gladly help people if I could ever see results...why are victims of the tsumani still waiting for the donations? I think that a lot of it is just helplessness over the vastness of the problems....millions of people dying of aids in africa...millions!!--it's far too much for my mind to comprehend. Does all this make me selfish? I don't know..but I don't think so...does all this make me feel overwhelmed and useless..you bet it does.
I keep telling myself that the small things that I do at home / in my own neighbourhood will make a difference..that it will be a small start...but I never see the results that would "save" the world.. I am concerned about where this planet is going and what it is becoming. I am concerned about my ability to do anything about it. I don't, however, feel selfish. I just feel helpless to stop it... I am not religious. I am a gay 57 year old man. I am in a 20 year monogamous relationship. I tell you this to put my answer in perspective.

I think you have a good point. But it's one that begs thought about the alternatives, isn't it?
If we weren't selfish, at least to some extent, how could any of us function? The fella who has to catch the fish for his family always has to eat the first fish himself because if he doesn't, he'll be no good to man or beast.
In the end it's probably more a matter of working to find and maintain some balance between what we need (note, not necessarily "want") for ourselves, and what we can reasonably do for others. And everybody is going to have very different ideas about what is a necessity and what is a luxury.
Peace be with you too m'darling :o)

Right now, I do not know if selfishness IS The largest problem in this country, But it is 'up there'. Man being a false god, and choosing to put self ahead of others may be part of the problem. Even so-called Christians that view Christ thru man's eyes may have a problem also..

I think most of the people in the developed worlds are too selfish... look at all of the celebs, politicians, etc. It's just a part of the human race, just to boost the ego and make people feel better about themselves. They probably feel they have to belong and by boasting, they get this. Or maybe they had screwed up childhoods. Or maybe they are just screwed up. But think of it like this: if humans weren't like this, we wouldn't have anything... I don't know if it's actually considered being self absorbed or just trying to educate (is education selfish?) but aren't many great people of the past like that? Galileo? Mozart? George Washington? etc... it's a tough subject because there are so many possibilities!

No I disagree ...
The largest problem facing the world is Godless ness..
There are atheist who believe in doing what ever they want ...
There are False Religionist who teach what ever they like in name of God.. they make their own religion ..
Then There are "Light takers" who are both atheist and religions, depending on the need to the time ...
Then there are those how cheat in name of religion ..just to make a living out of church or maintain there post, or engage in conversion since that way they get their salary...
Then there are those who don't care for God but blindly act according to their whims in the name of God, they pose them selves as Strict follower of Religion, but actually they accept only that part of Scriptures that suits there whims the most ...
All these are victims of Godlessness and that is the main problem facing the world ..

On one level you're right.
However, I tend to think a big problem is people sticking their noses into the business of others. Some people are more concerned about what their neighbors are doing than their own lives. "You shouldn't do that. It's bad for you."
We have forgotten that individual choices are INDIVIDUAL choices. I want to be left alone to go my own way; I do the same for others.

You are absolutely right. My friends that are not selfish, including myself, live happier lives than our self absorbed, egotistical friends. We have each other's back and look out for each other. When one finds a great opportunity we inform the other. It is a great pleasure for me to advance and be happy and watch my friends and family do the same. I love them and want what is best for them as I would myself.
