presumably as a sign for good luck.

The Horseshoe is suppose to be a symbol of good luck.
( but not if your a horse i guess )

Hung like a U, it is said to bring good fortune, to the person who finds it

Hung the other way, with the ends down, the fortune is said to pour out. Some say it pours out in those who stand beneath it, while others say it will simply pour out and be lost forever.

In regards to weddings, some people will buy decorative horseshoes, (usually lace covered cardboard) to hang upon the brides arm as she and her husband walk down the aisle together after exchanging vows. This is done as a way of wishing good luck and or good fortune upon the happy couple.

Anyway, I don't believe in luck.

The horse shoe should be hung upside down, in order to hold the good fortune of luck, to the one who hung it there. I've heard this all my life. I guess it would be a symbol of good luck to a newly married couple
Hung like this "u" not the other way.

The horseshoe is for good luck. I've seen it hung upright in the "u" shape, but I've also seen it hung upside down so that the good luck pours out over the people who enter the room.
