The witches are there for foreshadowing and a bit of comedy to the play. they are one of the primary reasons for the downfall of macbeth, because macbeth forced the prediction to come true. if he left it alon he would have gotten it one way or another

Sounds like I'm answering your homework... The witches were foreshadowing what was to happen to Macbeth in the play. If you don't kow what foreshadowing is then look it up!
