I am one of those people who complain about the poor grammar and atrocious spelling I find here on Yahoo Answeres. HOWEVER, my remarks were only directed at those people whose birth language is English.

I lived in Spain for three years and learned to speak spanish. I learned french later in school. At this point in time (25 plus years later) I am no longer proficient in either language. I regret this. I have the utmost respect for people who learn a second or third language. I would never intentionally make fun of a person who was doing their best to communicate in a language that was not their birth language. I apologize to anyone (to whom english is a second language) that I have offended or hurt with my remarks.

My remarks were intended for native english speakers. And to them I don't apologize. Stop being lazy. Learn to spell. Start using "correct" grammar. This is not "text messaging". You don't need to use the short cuts and "contractions" here that you use on chat boards or text messaging. Show people that you are educated.

addition to Segat: That was done on purpose with the knowledge that "normally" you don't start a sentence with the word "And". However while not always appreciated, there are times when it is acceptable. In this case, I started the sentence with "And" to impart emphasis. The practice of using a coordinating conjunction to start a sentence is initially discouraged by grammar teachers in order to avoid "sentence fragments" such as "And smart, too". Note that my sentence is not a "sentence fragment". In the later years of education, the rules of grammar are explained in greater detail in the expectation that students are now ready to understand the more subtle distinctions. You must have been absent that day.

So you are wrong in your comment. I am not a hypocrite.

I can understand why some people get irritated with spelling/grammar mistakes; language mistakes make the sentence sound in dissonance and unacceptable for the ear. However, I cannot understand how they find it acceptable to ignore the subject and comment on lateral things such as typos or spelling mistakes. I find such an act is out of context, and such people are out of focus.

On the other hand, this place have people from all around the globe, so one should start to realize that English is a second language (if not third) for a large number of Yahoo! Answers' posters. For those with English being a second (or third) language (like me), and posting in non-language related section like politics or religion, grammar and spelling mistakes are last if not least to care about.

One fellow used to post distracting answers to my questions, and one time this fellow’s answer to my question about restrictions to freedom of expression was: “no, my compete lak ov spelin is restricken my fredome of exprecion” picking up on 2 typos I had in that question (chrisian for Christian and westren for western). The funny part is that the same fellow writes moral as morale (it could be figured out from the context), and insists on using the morale more than once. Now, when you don’t know the difference between moral and morale, this is what I call spelling mistake, not my typos chrisian and westren.

Believe me angel, when people lack the tools to argue a point, they just try to distract by out of context replies which impose nothing except the validity of your argument. Plus, it’s too childish for grown-up to comment on language mistakes, I guess we have already passed this stage!

Because you write grammer instead of grammar. And English is not my native language. If it were, I'd forgive you 'spell mistakes' or 'everyones', but you have to learn something. And it's not true that English isn't first or second language for most of us.
Sorry, that's the way it is. You'd probably feel the same if it were your language that is spelled wrongly. I'm sure I would.

I'll have you know that MOST of the 'English speaking' people on here are American! Don't just accuse 'English' people of being ignorant!

Most of the people on here who criticise the poor English of foreigners aren't even capable of writing proper English themselves! Not even American English - which they constantly tell us is 'easier' than 'real' English!

Yes, the world throngs to Yahoo! Answers - but many people don't understand that Answers isn't available in every language that exists! They constantly say "Go and use YOUR country's Answers!" but Answers is only available in 9 languages. There are 19 Answers sites altogether, and 6 of them are English, 4 of them are Spanish, and 3 of them are Chinese!!

English = United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, Singapore,

Chinese = China, Taiwan, Hong Kong

Spanish = Spain, Argentina, Mexico, US en Español

Portuguese = Brazil

Italian = Italy

French = France

German = Germany

Korean = South Korea

Japanese = Japan

I think that your problem is NOT with "English people," it is with SOME Americans. The English being from Europe are more tolerant of other languages. (that's NOT to say they can't sometimes be self-righteous, or racist, pricks as well, they can - most of us can at one time or another.)

But I think you will find that many times the very group that rants most against any non-English speaker for their grammar, spelling, word order etc., are very often the very same American hillbilly, white trash, trailer park idiots who love to write things like "u r an *sshol, bcuz u r not from the US" or "I hate all u illegal scum 4 com here 2 steal US jobs,"

Let me be clear, I think most people (even Americans) in the Answers forum are pretty tolerant, (probably more than I am) but there are a large minority who simply are not, as I said they are often the same who cause the rest of us brain strain trying to read the crap that THEY write!

True! There is no way in the
world that I could go to ANY
other country and learn their
language and try to communicate!

I would be so bad off I would
appreciate the least little bit of
help or kindness that anyone
would have the heart to show me.

On something like a "foreign"
ANSWERS I would be totally
lost. So would most other
people in the US!

Yet they sit and smugly
display their disapproval at
the way people from other
countries attempt to
communicate on here.

Well, LA DE DA!

Sometimes abbreviations (shorter spellings) are used to type faster. Often, people do not know proper English, even if it is their first language. Education only works when a person wants to learn. If you want to practice English grammar, do not use a chat forum--try reading literature or a newspaper.

To spiritual but not religious:
Dear Sir/Madam, you sound so high and mighty blasting off like that at other people's poor English grammar, but hey, wait a minute hypocrite, one does not start a sentence with "And" as you did. What a fool you look like now!
