You don't say if the backboards and hoops retract toward the ceiling or not. If they retract, just have them retracted and ignore them. Attention will be on the floor level anyway.
If the hoops are visible and can't be retracted, talk to a theater department of a high school and talk to them about how to build flats that can be painted and temporarily installed to screen the hoops and backboards. You can paint any scene you'd like, either winter theme or you could attempt to replicate the appearance of the church's sanctuary. The theater department has suggestions about how to do that as well.
As I recall, the flats are made of muslin and lightweight lumber and can be transported, stood up and lashed together quickly and removed just as fast.

Since it's the holiday season, the poles and backboards could be wrapped in evergreen garlands. You could make them from live cuttings or artificial. Use garlands with holly berries or add silk poinsettias. I would wrap them to hide the front and the back. I'm assuming that the net can come down. Before you start decorating I would wire into the garlands either red or white holly berries or poinsettias. Now that I think of it they come in pinks, shades of whites, reds, peaches, so there would be some choices.
For my daughters wedding Christmas eve 13 years ago we used a beautiful 9 ft. Christmas tree with white lights and white silk poinsettias in the clusters and strings of pearl garlands.
This was the theme of the entire wedding.
So are you using a red, white and green or gold
for your color theme? Needless to say the wintry Christmas theme would be the least expensive, since, everything at that time of year is abundant and not terribly expensive.
Good Luck!!

Make a collage of the couple's life - family, school, friends, cars, hobbies, etc.. Then have the entire collage printed on a large sheet type of wallhanging - Do a different collage for the number of high level things you need to cover. Then have them hung from the ceiling all around the "ugly" spots. It would resemble a banner hung from the ceiling but it would be photos....
OR
Get very large cardboard boxes. Position them all around the hoop, covering them up, then decorate the boxes with fabric, curtains.
OR
Contact the prom coordinator at the high school - they've been doing this for yrs, probably have lots of pictures with all the ideas.
Good luck.....

don't hide them , use them . cover them with artificial flowers going up the poles and over the hoops let the flowers droop from the hoops and add some fresh greenery like branches of your shrubs from your garden , ribbons floating down from the hoops would look nice too.

Try to wrap the poles with little xmas lights. You can also wrap them with chicken wire and put something like ivy garland with the lights or not.
