You could treat her to city break, or if your funds don't stretch to that, a theatre trip or a nice tea at a posh hotel. Or you could arrange for some of her friends come round to hers or yours, and have a good old-fashioned tea party (in the garden weather permitting). My friend did this recently with her mother - she had to fetch her and some friends to her own house, and other people came round as well, she made all the party food, and they had pimms when they arrived. Lovely afternoon. They had good old-fashioned music played by a gramophone, so get some cd's in!

Give her what your heart wants to give. Money doesn't buy love.
example. I bought my Mom jewelry, which costs alot, for her birthday. Her reaction was a simple, yet loving thank you. Then my little sister gave my Mom a self-made bracelet. When my Mom got it, she cried. Because she knew that even though it wasn't expensive, my little sister made it with her heart. Just trust what your heart is saying, and maybe, you will also be able to make your Mom cry from Joy.

A friend of mine just brought her 75-year-old mother to a beauty saloon for a body massage. After the massage, her mother felt very relaxed and she enjoy it. She told my friend that she wouldn't mind going again. Or you can arrange for all the family members and her close friends for a gathering over a buffet meal. Most elderly like their family members to be close to them but I am not sure if your mother feels the same.

I would give her a voucher to a SPA and if you go well together, accompany her...

Else you can make her a surprise pic-nick and as a small gift give her a mug with some family photos on it, a nice book/novel and flowes ...

A cross stitch kit, or some other sort of crafts thing, as she can do these while watching TV, or even sitting out in her garden.

- Books?
- Something for the kitchen / cooking?
- Plant in a posh pot?
- Manicure / pedicure / hairdo (people of her age might feel funny about taking their clothes off for massage, but these kinds of pamperings might suit more)
- Nice bottle of wine?
- Cream tea at a posh hotel?
