He just pulled up behind me after i had only been driving a half a block since i pulled out of the parking lot. He decided to run my plates for some reason Even thoguh I had violated no law. My registeration was suspended yesterday but the only wasy he could tell was to run mymplates cuz the stickers good for a couple more months. I have up to date insurance and valid drivers liscense.Any ways he wrote me the ticket. I called my friend and she said that she thinks he needs to have a reason to run my plates. Is this true? The reason i have not re registered it is because I am getting a new car in two weeks I don't see the point in paying the 250 dollar fine on top of the registeration fee to drive the car for two weeks. Then have to reregister another one.

Don't need a reason to run the plates. I remember that I was coming back from college. Back to that beautiful city Chicago. I was not there but half an hour when the cops pulled me over. Of course the excuse was that my car looked like a car that was reported in a robbery. How many Mitsubishi gallants with New Hampshire license plates are there in Chicago.

Well they ran the plates asked all sort of questions like what are you doing with New Hampshire plates? Told them I had just finished college was heading back home check the trunk and look in the back all my earthly belonging from my apartment was in there. The cops actually huffed, then said well now your back get Illinois license plates. Then I reminded him that he had taken my New Hampshire drivers license and I needed it to drive the rest of the way home.

The utter look of disbelief on this one police officer's face was priceless. Could have been a Master card commercial.

4 years of College $Your very soul
Used Foreign car. $3000
Moving from the apartment $400
Gas $118
Drive tolls $ can't remember
Getting pulled over by cops $0
Expression of shock when I gave them my license and the car turn out to be mine.

Priceless.

Yes, an officer can run your plates anytime without a cause. You should have registered the plate no matter what. A judge may drop the charges when you go to court if you show a good enough cause and you actually do buy the other car. The fine would be minimal anyway. Cops usually do run plates of anyone he is behind if they are not going on a call.

Running plates is part of day to day business for police. We don't need a reason and as long as you consistantly run random plates there is no harm. Most police officers like to stay busy and between answering calls or on slow nights it is normal to just run random plates in hopes of a warrant hit on the registered owner, switched plates, expired plates, suspended registration, etc....
If you go register your vehicle and make it legal, bring proof of insurance, and explain your situation to the judge i'm sure he will be lenient... at least in our jurisdiction the court will dismiss the ticket and fine if the operator makes good on paperwork or equipment violations.... good luck.

In the states where I worked, no they can run the plates of any car they want, what time of day or night, if at night what parking lot. If that area had a lot of break in or hookers or drug traffic they run most plates of cars they get behind.

And they often drive by cars that look out of place in parking lots and run thier plates looking for stolen cars

Also here there is a sticker that goes on your plate, if that sticker is missing or out of date ( they can tell by the color in most areas) they don't even have to run the plate to see it is expired.

This is a topic that seems to keep popping up. The police need probable cause to pull you over. They do not need it to run your plate. However if running your plate shows a suspension then THATS probable cause. Theres a reason for those letters and numbers having to be hung from the rear bumper of your car.....

Police are always running plates with most every stop... Your best bet is to go to court and beg the judge for mercy because you were in violation of the law.

they need no reason to run plates at all. Many times they find stolen tags and even vehicles by just running plates that they see. He might have seen you do something and just wanted to check out your plates before he initiated a stop.

they can run your plates any time they want, which in alot of cases can be a good thing,,if someone had stolen your car then they would know, you can try to explain your side to a judge but the rest of us have to do things the legal way so I think you should have also done the same thing,,either paid it or parked it for the 2 weeks.Sorry about your luck.

sabrina your right you can not pull someone over with out reason.
The thing is cops dont need a reason even if they are told or even if it is in law that they cant pull you over for no reason because the simple fact here is if you take it to court you lose the judge always sides with the cops. An example of this was a year ago my father was driving his wifes car he wasnt speeding but his drivers license was suspended however what reason was he pulled over for? Well they gave an excuse that the plates regersterd that the car was stolen. The plates were lagit everything was ligit besides my fathers license. So he took it to court and the dispatcher was the one that supposedly told the cop that his plates were stolen ones. Some how the dispatcher lost the tape of the recording of the conversation because they do record the conversations for court purposes.
No reason to be pulled over
no tape to back up anything of why he was pulled over
and yet the cop couldnt even give a reason in court he was stuttering through the hole thing because the fact was it was one of those cops that just wanted some action to pull somebody over one of those cops who are dirty yet through all that stuttering and bs that was presented the court still sided with the cop

theres nothing you can do i am sorry
