we are moving into a large house with a large yard. I want to buy a watch dog who is also a family dog. We had a Bullmastif once who died of old age. A terrific dog as watch and family dog. But now in Germany you must have a permit for a type that the Bullmastif is. A Boerbel falls not under that type of dog. What do you all think?
second question: Can an english Bulldog be a watchdog or just a dog for loving?

First off, most dogs can be "watch dogs" simply because barking at strangers comes pretty naturally to them.

If you really want a specific breed that is intended to be a protector, than a Boerbel is a good example. They make very good family dogs, are natural protectors (especially around children), and have the fierce look that will scare any would-be intruder away.

However, Boerbels are known for being difficult to train and very stubborn. You never want to train a Boerbel to be aggressive since they can take it over the top. Since they are protectors, they are a very dominant breed and you need to understand them and their quirks before jumping in with both feet.

Ask yourself these questions before commiting to a Boerbel. Are you ready to commit to a dominant breed and step up to be the alpha? Are there training resources in your area? Do you have a behaviorist you can work with? Are you prepared for the cost of a Boerbel (as a somewhat rare breed, they tend to be pricey)?

As for the english bulldog, they aren't very good outdoor dogs because of their brachycephalic (short, pushed in face) nature. They also tend to be laid back and on the low-energy side of the spectrum.

Haha, I have an english bulldog. He is such a great dog, and lives for petting and playing. He is protective and he gives one or two "warning barks" if someone is near our house, and is really alert at night. He also LOOKS mean so I doubt anyone would try to come in your yard with a english bulldog in the yard. But he is a really nice tolerant dog so if someone DID come in your yard I doubt that he would go after someone. But then again I've heard that english bulldogs will give their lives to protect their owners...so who knows.

Any dog will be a watchdog.

A Boerbel is ALOT of dog, not so much in size but in temperment. I would not suggest one unless you are very good at managing dogs.
