I don't think so! God do not suggest, He commands, and the ten commandments are his command and ought to be taken seriously by all men. However this commandment was only given to the Jews in particular and it has ho bearing to the gentiles whatsoever. The ten commandment itself is not perfect, it lack something, that's why God said "I will make a better covemant" and that covenant is in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
By themselves (10-commandments) are not Gods Perfect Law! They are not a complete expression of God’s righteousness.
Some denominations have an over inflated opinion of the 10 commandments calling the Decalogue "Perfect". (The 10 commandments are never called perfect in scripture) They fail to realize that the 10 commandments are by themselves an incomplete law and they do not represent all of God's law.
Otheres said: The ten commandment law is a perfect law that contains everything man needs to know about moral living. Man does not need anything else but the Ten commandments to live perfectly. The 10 commandments constitute one's complete relationship with God and such constitutes God complete expression for righteousness.
Jesus is the complete expression of God’s righteousness, not the 10 commandments! Things the 10 commandments lack is:
1. Did not condemn: Drunkenness, obscene language, laziness, pride, pre-marital sex, homosexuality, bestiality.
2. Do not forbid brethren taking brethren to court. (1 Cor 6)
3. Does not command: forgiveness, repentance or helping the poor or Baptism or the Lord's supper.
4. The rich young ruler had kept the 10 commandments from his youth up, but Jesus said he lacked something even though he had kept the 10 commandments acceptably: Lk 18:18-23
5. It does not tell us about the kingdom of God or how to enter it.
6. There is no provision for forgiveness of sin therein. Heb 10:4
7. It permitted swearing, but Jesus forbade swearing: Mt 5:32
8. Four essential things lacking in 10 commandments: Acts 15:28-29 "For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than: these essen-tials: that you abstain from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication; if you keep yourselves free from such things, you will do well."
9. Jesus said that the ten commandments do not contain the two greatest moral commandments! Matthew 22:36-40 Where do the ten commandments teach to love your enemies??? Too bad for Sabbatarians: This would have been a great place for Jesus to quote the Sabbath law or at least one of the 10 commandments!
Matthew 22:36-40 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" And He said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' "This is the great and foremost commandment. "The second is like it, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' "On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets."
Never is the 10 commandment law called perfect, here is some reasons:
1. Eccl 12:13 says, "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of man." As we have seen above, the 10 commandments lack many things, so as in the entire Bible, the expression, "His commandments" is far more than merely the 10 commandments!
2. Some denominations will sometimes quote Psalms 19:7-9 as a proof text that the 10 com-mandments are called perfect! But a simple reading of the passage proves our point that what is perfect is the sum of God’s entire Old Testament law, including the cere-monial parts: "The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true; they are right-eous altogether."
Who will you believe?
• Some Denominations theology: The law and the prophets hangs on the ten commandments?
• Jesus’ theology: The 10 commandments and the prophets hang on these two laws Mt 22:40
I reserved the rights for you people to choose!
But I choose JESUS CHRIST

It's a greater possibility that the "10 Commandments" were actually "10 Promises."

The laws that we have set up to live by in this country are all structured from the 10 commandments. Do our laws suggest that you MIGHT be punished for murder? I don't think so. God has commanded us to follow His rules for a better life for us here on earth, makes sense don't it? We can chose not to follow the laws or commandments, and suffer the consequences. I would take them seriously if I were you. God Bless.

Hello!! :o) The 'Ten Commandments' are written in the Bible AS 'commandments' and not merely as 'suggestions'. But it's an interesting question - none the less. Try to think back when you were a kid. Whenever your mom or dad [or whoever it was who was taking care of you] said, "I'd like you to go to bed now!!" Did you think of that as a 'suggestion' or as a 'commandment'?! LOL And God never said, "I'd LIKE you not to murder, etc." He said, "YOU WILL NOT MURDER!!" Doesn't sound like there is much room for debate!! [At least not from me - but you go ahead - if you like!!] lol Craig!! :o)

God does not suggest that we honor are mother and father, or that we do not kill, he commands them. Imagine if our mothers and fathers never gave us strict orders but only suggestions, It would lose its entire meaning. He commands these things for us because he knows what is right for us.

If they were just suggestions, then God couldn't hold us accountable for breaking them, just like in our american legal system. If our government just suggested that murder was illegal, and you murdered somebody, how could you be held accountabe, since you broke no law?

Good question--maybe so. But whatever the case may be, they are still good rules for Christians to go by, eh?
