NiceGuy has it right, as I witnessed not only one Blue Moon but two in 2000 .The first was Jan.2 and the next Jan 31 then it occurred again in March on the 2nd and then March 31..the double in a year is not common.. but single blue moons happen at least once a year every few years..2001 had a single Blue Moon in Nov. on 1st and the 30th . then in 2004 there was a Blue Moon in July on the 2nd and then the 31st . The next will be in 2007 on June 1 and the 30th. You can check out dates by going to aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/MoonPhases.html

Blue moon probably originates from the expression "never in a blue moon". In other words, it means something which will never happen. Blue moon may also appear in some songs but probably has a different meaning, such as of the "blues".

NICEGUY almost has the correct answer. The blue moon is the 2nd FULL moon in a given month. It can happen once in a year (never twice) but averages out at about once every five years.
The SAYING "once in a blue moon" comes from that!

considering how old i am, probably. not sure what you mean by "how often this happens"...a "blue moon" is the second full moon in a month, so in that sense, the anwer is "once a month" But if you mean how frequently does a month with two full moons occur (once a year?, once a decade?), i don't know, you could probably google it.
