It will not reconnect with its mother. it now has an odor that is not normal to its mother. the best thing you can do is work with the bird and finish raising it. the key to feeding is hamburger meat. it works well. then work into its diet small live bugs. it will take a week of hamburger or so. then start to work with it in flying. the scratch will heal up in time. put a little triple antibiotic on it. good luck you can do it. you are now its mother.....

Stop listening to the people who keep saying that the mother won't take it back because you touched it. This is a MYTH. Songbirds do not have a developed sense of smell (they are visual).
Question one...does it have feathers and a short tail? If yes, then it is called a fledgling and is preparing to learn how to fly. Typically most birds go to the ground for about 24-48 hours before they actually get the hang of flying. During this time, the parents will continue to feed it while it is on the ground. If the bird looks like this, then you will simply be able to put it back out where you found it. REMEMBER...keep your dog on a leash for the time period...you don't want it to come back in your dogs' mouth.
If it doesn't have any feathers...then follow the steps below:
You will be building a make-shift nest. Take an empty plastic tub (like the smaller kind you get with butter in it). Pop small holes in the bottom of it for drainage. Go outside and attach it to the tree closest to where you found it. Line the inside of the container with grass (make it feel like a nest). Put the baby bird back inside of it and then walk away. Try to put it where you can see it from indoors, or at a distance. If you keep going to check on it constantly this will deter the parents.
They will usually come back within a few hours time. If neither of these work, click on the link to find a wildlife rehabilitator near you.

Don't worry about the mother, and certain bird will NOT take in a foster that's not their own, so he's all yours now matey for at least 9 mos.
Ok, now - make it a warm place, always with a 75watt bulb, but also shelter from the direct light. Try putting an aquirium thermonmeter in there and make sure it is either 76f or 24c degrees (depending on where you live) -
Try first a bit of milk in an eyedropper. That's to get the bird used to you as a source of food.
Then you have to buy a handmix feed from a pet store. If you can't do that - at least get something like sustagen, ensure, etc. Don't worry - they don't eat much at one sitting.
Do not force the eyedropper down it's mouth. Place it gently inside the beek and let the bird get the drops on his tongue to eat.
Socialise the bird, but keep it away from even the sight of the dog!
When handling, let them fall asleep on you. You are a natural heater. You're warm, comfy, and you feed them. Anyone can be a bird mom.
Depending on how young, feed as often as they want (usually 2-4 hr MAX!!) When they get a little older, start watering down the liquid until at 6 weeks they either drink out of a water bowl themselves and eat solid food.
Besides seeds (their beak isn't that strong yet) try shelled nuts (esp Pine Nuts, they love those) and pieces of fruit, bananna, watermelon, strawberry, apple, peach, pineapple - whatever!
And when they're technically an "adult" at 9 mos of age - you may find they like corks to tear apart, toys that make noise, a mirror, and solid food they can hold - celery sticks, say...
Good luck little man, and I think it's very nice that you care about the rest of the creatures of the planet & are willing to take responsibility for what you're dog did... good on ya! :)
Blessed Be,
Buggy

As far as collecting worms- I know that in the summer when I would empty the kids pool the worms would start coming up after a bit from the ground. I assume because it was too much water in the soil and so they were coming to the top. Before this I ve also noticed that after it would rain that there would be more birds pecking and on the lawn and after the above happened I assume it was because they could get the worms easier.
So maybe if you over soak an area of your yard it would make it easier to get them. I assume especially if you have a place with just dirt that some plants are growing in-the healthier the soil there would be more worms.

Hmm...Well since you seem driven to nurse this unfortunate bird back to health you should probably continue what you are doing. The bird's parents are probably gone but if they are not and you know where the nest is then you can just put it back. It is a myth that the birds will "smell" you on the baby bird and not take care of it. Find some worms in your yard...you may have to dig up under some grass. grind the worm up very small with whatever and see if the bird will eat some. Good luck.

I would get some stage 1 baby food. Chicken would be the best choice. Make sure it is warmed to about bird body temp. About 101 degrees and use a thermometer if you have one. Take a flat tooth pick and put a bit on the end. Drop it into the babies mouth.
If the dog scratched the baby with his claws it just may survive. However if it was with his teeth, I doubt that the baby will survive. Mammals have a bacteria in their mouths that is toxic to birds.
Keep him very warm with a heating pad turned on low UNDER a towel. Don't put the heating pad under the whole box as you want the baby to be able to move off the heated area if it gets too hot. If the baby food is too thick, adding a bit of water would be good. You want it to be the consistency of applesauce.
Wash your hands before handling the baby and afterwards.
Good luck.

Hi Danielle. I think you are kind to try to save this baby bird.
If you haven't found any worms yet, maybe you could get some maggots from a fishing shop and cut them up very small.
The only thing you can do to get him back with his mum is to leave him somewhere she can see him. If you want to stand guard over him do it standing some way away, or else she won't come to him.
If in the end he doesn't survive, try not to be too upset about it. You have done your best. Maybe you could get your dog some training so he stops attacking birds? A lot of dog training schools do it for free.
Good luck. You've done well.

Birds don't have a sense of smell. If you know where the nest is, you can put it back, but if it's been a couple of days, the nest is probably already abandoned. Birds are great insect eaters. You can try catching the moths that fly around around your porchlight at night, or you can go a baitshop and buy some redworms and give the bird little pieces if it. Just chop the worms up with a knife, or put some in a sandwich bag and hit them with a meat tenderizing hammer.

First the mother will not come back for him, she has too many unusual smells on him now.You can try hand feeding formula that can be gotten at the pet store, but with it being a wild bird, I doubt this diet will work with him. You should call the local zoo who may have a phone number to a local rescue service who can either direct you to a place you can bring the baby, or may even pick it up. But Sweetheart, time is a very dangerous thing with tiny birds they don't last long. If something happens to the baby, you have to understand that you tried to do your best. Good luck.

Call the vet they can get you in contact with a group that is trained to care for injured birds and getting them back into the wild. Because you have touched the bird the mother will not come back for the baby (this is the way with all wild animals). Call today.
