Islam as a religion puts women lower than men. Apart from the fact that this is total bull, what is the point? Is it to scare women into submission of power hungry men?

The Christian Bible is sexist too.
"But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God." (I Corinthians 11:3)

"For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man." (I Corinthians 11:8-9)

What is with this?

Women are the ones who go through labour! They should get a bigger pat on the back!

Hi Firstly, I'm very sorry that you feel like this about your country and culture. I've heard a lot of corruption stories about Egypt, but I've also heard a lot about the good sides of it. Secondly, it's just a phase, which will be over soon. Don't hate on your religion, because every religion promotes peace. Remember, there are over dozen people living in Egypt, a half cannot represent a whole. P.S. Even I've seen a lot of arabs who think that they are superior to other muslims from different cultures, that's what makes me dislike them strongly. However, I then tell myself what I tell you.. Not everyone is the same. I hope all goes well for you, girl. Stay patient beautiful

I don't believe Islam or Christianity is sexist toward women. In both religions, women play a huge part in the spreading of the ministry. Women such as Khadijah (Islam) and Mary Magdaline (Christianity) were instrumental in their respective religions.

It's men and society, not the religion, that is sexist. Ppl put their own interpretations on scripture, but that doesn't make it be the true meaning of said scripture.

I'm a Christian with a Western viewpoint on life, but I was recently in the Middle East, and firsthand observed Muslim women. They definitely have their own opinions, and choose to observe Islam, and do things that we in the West would consider demeaning to women-- such as covering up their hair and bodies. At first I didn't understand why they did such, but the more I watched, the more I understand that it wasn't a way to subjegate women, but rather present them as equals-- where men were not so caught up in their beauty/sex appeal to understand what the women were actually trying to say. Some of that type of equality would fair well in the West, where women are extremely superficial, and use their sex as a way to overcome social obstacles. Islam, in principle, has sexual equality.

Christianity, in principle, also has sexual equality.

There is a difference between equality and capacity, and I believe these religions understand that. The two genders may be the same in terms of salvation and spiritual awareness, but there are naturally defined roles for both genders that are obvious and shouldn't be erased. A man cannot be a woman's equal in nurturing, for example, nor a can woman be a man's equal in physical strength. We have different roles to fulfill on this earth, and there's nothing wrong with recognizing it. The problem comes when one gender tries to make inferior the other, and uses something as passionately fueled as religion to banister their argument.

Well, there are many answers to this question. The one that you would find more interesting is in the Christian Bible (which the Islams believe in too). Woman was made from a part of man. Therefore the woman should be subservient to men. Also, many stories of the Bible show that women are serving men, like you said. The only time that a woman took control was when God was trying punish the men... apparenty it's of great shame that you have to listen to a woman. Islams believe in the 4 cast system. A long time ago they used to believe that people who shed blood are the worst of people. Except soldiers who shed blood to protect others. When you refer to labor as one of women's trimphs, in Islam it's considered very "unclean." There are many more reasons. These are just a few.

Attitudes towards women is by far, affected more by culture, over all level of education of the society, income and a woman's perception of self.

As far as Muslim Culture is concerned people tend to equate it to being Arab. This should not be the case.

Muslims are from all corners of the world, from all walks of life, making a generalization is not possible.

Example,

The Undangs of Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, exhibit matrilineal succession in their elective chieftaincies. Similarly,
the Minangkabau ethnic group, indigenous to the highlands of West Sumatra is matrilineal, with property and land passing down from mother to daughter. This is in contrast to most other Muslim cultures are which are patrilinear.

If you want a more, lets just say, "radical" theories read Da VInci Code by Dan Brown. It gives a good introduction into the "Sacred Feminine" which Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) are rather not fond of.

It also interesting to look at this from the view point of practioners of the Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism as u all call it), where Goddesses are venerated. Unfortunately I hold no knowledge on it.

Islam And Sexism

"For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. " (I Corinthians 11:8-9)

We all know that Eve was created from Adam's rib. So there is no sexism in the Bible, there's only TRUTH.
You should read the whole "Corinthians":

"The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife's body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband's body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife." Corinthians 7:3-4
"In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God." Corinthians 11:11-12

And about islam- it probably puts women lower than men.

Islam condones sex with any female from the age of nine. They also allow "temporary" marriages, for a week, a month, or so. They also teach their children from infancy to carry and fire assault rifles and to strap explosives to their bodies in order to kill Christians and Jews, so they may become martyrs and receive 72 mansions with 72 rooms with 72 virgins in each room to work out their fleshly lust upon. The Bible teaches that man and woman are different, but dependant upon one another. The man is the head of the household, but the woman runs it. The man is stronger, but like steel compared to the fine gold of a woman. The woman is the weaker vessle, but is far more powerful than the man in many areas. Men are told to love their wives like Christ loved trhe church. Women are told to honor their husbands.

The Koran says "Make no friends with a Christian or a Jew, but instead kill them where they stand"

The Bible says "Love is the greatest commandment, and all the commandments hang upon love"

Koran:
5.51" : O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for
friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them
for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the
unjust people.
9.30
The last hour will not come before the Muslims fight the Jews and the Muslims kill them, so that Jews will hide behind stones and trees and the Stone and the tree will say, O Muslim, O servant of God! There is a Jew behind me; come and kill him.

And Marissa your own Koran quote below speaks volumes on the treatment of women, as being worth half of a man:

An-Nisa | 176 verses | The Women سورة النساء
Sura #4 | Madina
11 Allah chargeth you concerning (the provision for) your children: to the male the equivalent of the portion of two females

Okay some people are narrow minded!(read other answers harroon in particular!) There are a few ways to view the question that you asked! Harroon or whatever he;s just asking! If people observe things they make assumptions! I do believe that the islamic women deserve more freedom being a woman myself. Like there women getting beaten to death because they had been raped even by family members it is unfair! But they have there belifs and only the islamic people can cahnge those belifs!

Actually, it is Islam which holds women in high esteem. In Islam, women are treated at par with men on many issues.
After marriage, the wife has an identity of her own. In respect of property also she has a say, among others.

But I understand what you mean by your question. Most Moslem males are dominating by nature and they ill-treat their wife/wives as if they were nothing but chattels. This can be linked to various "psychosociological" factors and has nothing to do with religion. You cannot label it as a bane of religion.

If you study Islamic law then you will be confused as anyone else because what is happening is far from what it ought to be.

You say Islam is sexist, yet you quote some other books? Hmm are you confused.

If you actually studied Islam you'd find women are equal, women had more rights 1400 years ago in the Islamic period that women of today still don't have.

Come on, women didn't even have souls in the "western world" til the late 18th century.

Get past your ignorance and learn before you start using the internet in such a wasteful manner.
