The most loyal and trustworthy dog is the Beagle. They will stick by you through thick and thin. If the owner dies, they are an example of being heart broken.

This question keeps coming up and it really doesn't have an answer!
The four breeds you mention are all different and have been bred for different reasons.
The Labrador Retriever is the best for retrieving game. It can be trained to wait on command, mark where a shot bird has fallen, go and get the bird and bring it back without damaging it.
It will do this all day long very happliy and is probably the best at what it does.
The Dalmation was originally a hunting dog but is best known as a guard dog which ran along with coaches and carriages and protected the occupants from footpads. It has tremendous stamina and retains a strong guard instinct.
As a carriage dog, it was probably the best at what it did.
Greyhounds and their smaller cousins, the Whippets, were bred originally in the Middle East as sight hounds. The Greyhound is probably the fastest dog breed of all but both the Greyhound and the Whippet are sprinters - they were not bred for long distance running.
The Whippet was, and still is, favoured by some because of its compact size.
Both the Whippet and the Greyhound could outrun the Labrador and the Dalmation over a short distance but they would make poor retrievers and/or guard dogs.
A breed can only be 'best' at what it is supposed to do. The best greyhound is the fastest; the best labrador is the one with the most successful retrieves.
None of these breeds, which I greatly admire for their various attributes, are among my 'favourite' breeds - which dog you get as a pet or companion is down to personal taste and whether or not you have the ability to care for the breed that you choose.
I have owned various breeds - none of them was the 'best' - they were all great companions.
If your question is 'Which of these four breeds makes the most suitable pet?' then you will get a completely different answer.

Labs: very intellegent, great with kids, extreemly loyal. Hope that you are not in an apartment though, they need to be outside for exercise
Greyhound and whippett... Not with small children. Also they can easily get leg injuries, a simple thing like jumping off a couch can cause injury. If you choose greyhound remember that there are greyhound adoption agencies that have wonderfull older dogs ( x race dogs, that would have been put down, they need a little more patience at first.)
Dalmation-although cute and depected as great dogs in cartoon movies, they can be fickle. Some are very hyper and do not tolerate kids very well. They are a work dog and not necessarily a good house pet.
Whichever you choose be sure to get proper vaccines and heart worm protection.....

whippets are too breakable...dalmations too flakey and unresponsive..labradors need to much mental stimulation. I go with the good old greyhound. There are so many needing good homes, they make great dogs. they laze around most of the day and only need two twenty minute onlead walks a day. They just require special greyhound food. They are lovely

Go with the greyhound. They are sweet, mellow, lovable dogs. And you can probably save it's life. Try any one of the greyhound rescue orgs. Labs are great but a dime a dozen. They don't have any trouble finding homes. Dalmations are cute and sweet but require a lot of attention and training and exercise. They are big time chewers.

the best type of dog is a Labrador. they are so gentle but good watch dogs. what ever you do don't get a dalmatian or a greyhound the are naturally mean by nature. they like to attack and bit. they are meaner than a pit-bull or boxer. so a Labrador you best bet. especially if you have kids.

Whippet or greyhound depending on your preference for size. These breeds are incredibly loyal, short haired so never smell or shed hair in the house, very intelligent and quirk their hairy little eyebrows when you talk to them.
the other great thing is that although people think they need loads of exercise, in fact they love curling up in the house, as long as they get a walk where they can run off their energy they will be placid the rest of the time, throwing a ball in a large yard used to be all the exercise my whippet needed

What type of person are you? Sorry but you didn't need to ask the Q. You made the answer a bit hard. None of the breeds you mentioned are bad dogs but why be so narrow minded? Go look at a dog in a cage that's about to be put down and explain to me why you want a "Name" brand dog. Adopt a "Friend" for life. PLZ

Well, I like beagles and mutts.
But with your suggestions, I'll have to go with labradors. Dalmations are cute, but purebreds can have a lot of medical problems, I think eyesight and hips.
Greyhounds have good temperments, too, though, at least the one I know does, but I'm pretty sure it's indicative of their breed.
