You have to have a real connection, have a little fun and I think most important leave questions or curiositys in the other person's mind that they'll want a chance to get answered later. That's kind of a tough question, it's easier to answer what makes a bad first date. I know when I've had a good first date, but I couldn't engineer one. On the other hand, I could easily engineer a bad first date.

Get her a nice box of chocolates when you pick her up from her place. For starters, catch a movie so you have plenty to talk about after the movie. Exchange opinions about the show, digress to other issues...continue your conversation in a nice cosy restaurant (NOT FASTFOOD OR HAWKER CENTRE, PLEASE!). Then proceed to the beach to have a quiet moment (look at the stars, hear the sound of the waves...) and let her share your chocolates with you. Hee hee.
