Question

encourages me to ask more: First of all accept my deep appreciation for ignorant people like me who do not see yet the true context of Islam.

My third question is: What does Quran say about infidels? Are non-believers of Islam automatically labelled as infidels and is it true that infidels are targeted for violent actions from among Muslim members? This summarizes what I learned from responses in this forum. With your indulgence, pls. enlighten us with your knowledge in this view with uncut version of Quran.

let me clearify the point.
Islam doesnot let me again say does NOT allow the killing of innocent people regardless of their faith. it is in jihad that it allows to kill the people who fight against islam and muslims but not those who are innocent and does not harm muslims.

A few selected verses from the Qur’an are often misquoted to perpetuate the myth that Islam promotes violence, and exhorts its followers to kill those outside the pale of Islam.

1. Verse from Surah Taubah
The following verse from Surah Taubah is very often quoted by critics of Islam, to show that Islam promotes violence, bloodshed and brutality:

"Kill the mushriqeen (pagans, polytheists, kuffar) where ever you find them."
[Al-Qur’an 9:5]

2. Context of verse is during battlefield
Critics of Islam actually quote this verse out of context. In order to understand the context, we need to read from verse 1 of this surah. It says that there was a peace treaty between the Muslims and the Mushriqs (pagans) of Makkah. This treaty was violated by the Mushriqs of Makkah. A period of four months was given to the Mushriqs of Makkah to make amends. Otherwise war would be declared against them. Verse 5 of Surah Taubah says:

"But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is oft-forgiving, Most merciful."
[Al-Qur’an 9:5]

This verse is quoted during a battle.

3. Example of war between America and Vietnam
We know that America was once at war with Vietnam. Suppose the President of America or the General of the American Army told the American soldiers during the war: "Wherever you find the Vietnamese, kill them". Today if I say that the American President said, "Wherever you find Vietnamese, kill them" without giving the context, I will make him sound like a butcher. But if I quote him in context, that he said it during a war, it will sound very logical, as he was trying to boost the morale of the American soldiers during the war.

4. Verse 9:5 quoted to boost morale of Muslims during battle

Similarly in Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 5 the Qur’an says, "Kill the Mushriqs where ever you find them", during a battle to boost the morale of the Muslim soldiers. What the Qur’an is telling Muslim soldiers is, don’t be afraid during battle; wherever you find the enemies kill them.

5. Shourie jumps from verse 5 to verse 7
Arun Shourie is one of the staunchest critics of Islam in India. He quotes the same verse, Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 5 in his book ‘The World of Fatwahs’, on page 572. After quoting verse 5 he jumps to verse 7 of Surah Taubah. Any sensible person will realise that he has skipped verse 6.

6. Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 6 gives the answer
Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 6 gives the answer to the allegation that Islam promotes violence, brutality and bloodshed. It says:

"If one amongst the pagans ask thee for asylum,grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah; and then escort him to where he can be secure that is because they are men without knowledge."
[Al-Qur’an 9:6]

The Qur’an not only says that a Mushriq seeking asylum during the battle should be granted refuge, but also that he should be escorted to a secure place. In the present international scenario, even a kind, peace-loving army General, during a battle, may let the enemy soldiers go free, if they want peace. But which army General will ever tell his soldiers, that if the enemy soldiers want peace during a battle, don’t just let them go free, but also escort them to a place of security?

This is exactly what Allah (swt) says in the Glorious Qur’an to promote peace in the world.

abir... thanks for the verses--- it just seems to me that those that seem to be in charge go along with your quran whole heartedly-- i know i am not being politically correct-- nor do i dislike muslims--but i see very little personal freedom in the countries that are muslim.. and women have no rights at all... and those in charge seem to despise anything that appears like personal freedom and kill their own-- all in the name of Allah... i have read the quran--if it was followed by those muslims that seem to be in charge--then we wouldnt really have a problem would we? simply put--anybody that kills their own for not agreeing with the ppl in charge--really gives less than a s*** about the rest of us

i totally agree with Abir. but to shorten what he wrote. islam is a peacefull religion..some extremist have ruined it and made it a bad religion in eyes of all people. in turth we are suppose to act friendly with non muslims and only fight them if they start the fight first..its harm to kill anyone unless its in a war.... suicide is harm too so all the suicide bomber people who supposedley think they goin to heaven because they are doing a good thing they are not....allah hates it when a person takes away they life allah gave him and others. Allah clealy states that its not up to you to decide who shall live and who shall die........ i hope this answers it

if Islam allow muslim to marry christian or jewish, then how can Islam forbid being friendly with non-muslim. ?

however the Quran clearly mentioned two kinds of non-muslim.

1st one are those who DID NOT fight muslims for their religion neither kick them out of their home, and those God command muslims to be kind to them, friendly and fair.
you will find that in Quran 60:8

the 2nd ones are the nasty one. those who fought muslims because of their religion, and those who are hurting muslims by kick them out of their homes. to NOT be frienldy with them.

Infidel is not a word used to describe non-Muslims, but people who have opposed Islam and innocent people - not in disbelief, but in hostilities. So naturally, the Qur'an tells us to fight them. I've already talked about Islam's attitude on war and fighting "infidels" in one of your previous questions:

As for the intolerance of other religions (i.e. a Muslim's relationship with Christian, Jews, or anyone who has not fought the Muslims), then here is a section that I've wrote pertaining to this matter, as it is a very common question among non-Muslims like yourself. Again, it's a bit long, but that's the only way to give a complete and satisfying answer.

Many people critique Islam by saying that it does not tolerate other religions when it clearly states in the Qur’an: “[…] and He does not forbid you to deal kindly and justly with anyone who has not fought you for your faith or driven you out of your homes: God loves the just.” 60:8 Perhaps the qur’anic verse they rely on the most is verse 5:51 which says: “You who believe, do not take the Jews and Christians as allies: they are allies only to each other. Anyone who takes them as an ally becomes one of them – God does not guide such wrongdoers.” However, the Jews and Christians talked about here are clearly just the ones who are against the Muslim camp, as is clear from the following verses up to 5:59 : “You who believe, do not take as allies those who ridicule your religion and make fun of it – whether people who were given the Scripture before you, or disbelievers – and be mindful of God if you are true believers. When you make the call to prayer, they ridicule it and make fun of it: this is because they are people who do not reason. Say [Prophet], ‘People of the Book, do you resent us for any reason other than the fact that we believe in God, in what was sent down to us, and in what was sent before us, while most of you are disobedient?’ ”

Non-Muslims who want to show how Islam is intolerant of others also use the following qur’anic verse: “He that chooses a religion other than Islam, it will not be accepted of him and in the world to come, he will be one of the lost.” 3:85 However, as mentioned before, “the word ‘Islam’ in the Arabic of the Qur’an means complete devotion/submission to God, unmixed with worship of any other. All earlier prophets are thus described by the Qur’an as Muslims. Those who read this word ‘Islam’ in the sense of the religion of prophet Muhammad PBUH will illegitimately set up a barrier between Islam and other monotheistic religions.” (Haleem, 2004). Logically, for Islam to be the true religion of God, it has to be attainable by any person, at any time, anywhere. It is this fundamental principle of one surrendering his will to God which makes Islam universal and not constrained to a certain type of people.

Further proof that Islam does not oppose peoples’ different beliefs can be seen in the following qur’anic verses: “The [Muslim] believers, the Jews, the Christians, and the Sabians – all those who believe in God and the Last Day and do good – will have their rewards with their Lord. No fear for them, nor will they grieve”; 2:62 “Some of the People of the Book believe in God, in what has been sent down to you and in what was sent down to them: humbling themselves before God, they would never sell God’s revelation for a small price. These people will have their rewards with their Lord: God is swift in reckoning”; 3:199 “You [Prophet] are sure to find that the most hostile to the believers are the Jews and those who associate other deities with God ; you are sure to find that the closest in affection towards the believers are those who say, ‘We are Christians,’ for there are among them people devoted to learning and ascetics. These people are not given to arrogance, and when they listen to what has been sent down to the Messenger, you will see their eyes overflowing with tears because they recognize the truth [in it]. They say, ‘Our Lord, we believe, so count us amongst the witnesses. Why should we not believe in God and in the truth that has come down to us when we long for our Lord to include us in the company of the righteous?’ For saying this, God has rewarded them with Gardens graced with flowing streams, and there they will stay: that is the reward of those who do good.” 5:82-85

Hence, the verse “He that chooses a religion other than Islam, it will not be accepted of him and in the world to come, he will be one of the lost” cannot be interpreted as shunning off any person who is not a Muslim. The Qur’an simply underlines the fact that there are differences between Islam, Judaism, and Christianity which sets them apart – depending on what the followers of each religion believe. “We have assigned a law and a path to each of you. If God had so willed, He would have made you one community, but He wanted to test you through that which He has given you, so race to do good: you will all return to God and He will make clear to you the matters you differed about.” 5:48

“The Qur’an clearly defines its relationship with earlier scriptures by saying: ‘He has sent the Scripture down to you [Prophet] with the Truth, confirming what went before: He sent down the Torah and the Gospel earlier as a guide for people.’ 3:3-4 ” In ‘Consultation’, it says, “In matters of faith, He has laid down for you [people] the same commandment that He gave Noah, which We have revealed to you [Muhammad] and which We enjoined on Abraham and Moses and Jesus: ‘Uphold the faith and do not divide into factions within it’ – what you [Prophet] call upon the idolaters to do is hard for them; God chooses whoever He pleases for Himself and guides towards Himself those who turn to Him. They divided, out of rivalry, only after knowledge had come to them […]. Those after them, who inherited the Scripture, are in disquieting doubt about it. So [Prophet] call people to that faith and follow the straight path as you have been commanded. Do not go by what they desire, but say, ‘I believe in whatever Scripture God has sent down. I am commanded to bring justice between you. God is our Lord and your Lord – to us our deeds and to you yours, so let there be no argument between us and you – God will gather us together, and to Him we shall return.’ 42:13-14/15 ” “The Qur’an forbids arguing with the People of the Book except in the best way and urges the Muslims to say, ‘We believe in what was revealed to us and in what was revealed to you; our God and your God are one [and the same].’ 29:46 And in another verse, it says, ‘Say, “People of the Book, let us arrive at a statement that is common to us all: we worship God alone, we ascribe no partner to Him, and none of us takes others beside God as Lords.” 3:64’ ” (Haleem, 2004).
