I just took an I.Q. test for the first time. I scored a 120. I was just wondering what the average I.Q. is. Am I average?

Hello!! :o) On those computer I.Q. test 'things' - I usually end up with 115 or so. It's important to note that an I.Q. test does NOT measure how 'smart' one is in a general sense. In fact - it's quite specific in what it actually measures. Someone who can see things in a more 'mathematical' sort of way will often do quite well on an I.Q. test. I've gone to a few Mensa parties in my life - and believe you me - having a high I.Q. does NOT necessarily make someone all that 'interesting'!! lol [OR all that 'smart' - come to think of it] Craig!! :o)

Depends on the test -- there are several tests that claim to measure intelligence and present the result as a single number. Harvard professor Stephen J. Gould disputes that assumption in a book called "The Mismeasure of Man."

"...the average IQ here for all states is about 100, which is slightly larger than America's 98 IQ..." (source 1, below)

"Intelligence tests come in many forms, and some tests use a single type of item or question. Most tests yield both an overall score and individual subtest scores. Regardless of design, all IQ tests attempt to measure the same general intelligence. Component tests are generally designed and selected because they are found to be predictive of later intellectual development, such as educational achievement. IQ also correlates with job performance, socioeconomic advancement, and "social pathologies". Recent work has demonstrated links between IQ and health, longevity, and functional literacy. However, IQ tests do not measure all meanings of "intelligence", such as creativity. IQ scores are relative (like placement in a race), not absolute (like the measurement of a ruler)." (source 2)

HISTORY of IQ tests:
"In 1905, the French psychologist Alfred Binet published the first modern intelligence test...
A further refinement of the Binet-Simon scale was published in 1916 by Lewis M. Terman (Stanford University) which he named the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale. It formed the basis for one of the ... tests still commonly used today." (source 2)

"There are a variety of different IQ tests (e.g., Stanford-Binet, WISC-R, Raven's Progressive Matrices, Cattell Culture Fair III, Universal Nonverbal Intelligence Test, and others)." (source 2)

I have taken the Stanford-Binet, the MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory), Raven's Progressive Matrices and a couple of others over the years. The number I usually get is between 130 and 145...
