Any group defines the boundaries of what is IN and what is OUT. Each of us, regardless of who we are have this defintion in our hearts and minds, even when we are very liberal. Even the most liberal will see themselves as a group or sect apart based on what is acceptable and what is not.

Being a sect is okay. Bigotry though is something completely different from being a sect, although sectarian technically is a negative term with the connotation of bigotry based on a sect.

Bigotry is intolerance of the existence of others. Usually bigotry is a product of extreme ignorance and insecurity based on lack of confidence, or in some cases overconfidence in their cause. People who are spiritual can not be bigotted. People who are religious can at times be sick from this disease, which is the disease that moves them away from God without their realizing it.

The Lord Almighty is the Creator of everyone and has bestowed the freedom of association and conscience to one and all. A bigotted person essentially questions the right that the Lord has given to the people and thus equates himself with the Lord Almighty the Creator Himself, which is a grave and serious error with deep consequences. If you ask the bigotted person if you are equal to your God, he would certainly answer in the negative, as they think that is not the case, as they have not stopped and given thought.

I hope this makes sense.

My understanding is that sectarian can be narrowly confined to certain beliefs etc. but is not necessarily bigoted. I.e.,a humble Jesuit. Although it is also used to refer to bigoted persons or actions. I.e., Sectarian clashes between Shiites and Sunni moslems.

sectarian is a difference of belief within a religion on theological point while keeping the main faith, a bigot doesn't need to be religious they just hate

Sectarian - Fervently opting into a certain mindset or group of likeminded individuals.

Bigoted - Predisposed against those of a different mindset for no good reason other than the fact that they are not like you

Bigoted = obstinately and unthinkingly devoted to a particular set of beliefs

Sectarian = relating to a particular set of religious or philosophical beliefs

So, sectarian isn't necessarily obstinate and unthinking (although it is often taken to imply this); bigoted does not necessarily relate to religion or philosophy, it can relate to any beliefs.

A lot of people equivocate (use them as if they were the same when they're not), but they're not *actually* the same thing.

Sectarian refers to division - good, bad, or indifferent.

Bigotry refers to judgements made. Not only are these two things different, but one is good and the other bad.

Oversimplified answer, but it's all I can do on short notice.
